Barkley: Fiction & Non Fiction

Barkley: Fiction & Non Fiction

It appears Spurs have cornered the market in transfer sagas that drag on to little or no discernible purpose and this summer’s is Ross Barkley.

The latest gossip from The Mirror was that the player was out of his mind and DEMANDING £150,000 a week. Gladys tells me that that this was complete fiction.

If the lad is a problem at all, it’s that he has allowed himself to be surrounded by every conceivable agent and representative going. This apparently isn’t uncommon, it just makes things occasionally a tad tedious.

Personal terms were agreed some considerable time ago and the boy wants to play for Spurs.

So what’s the hold up?

Levy’s the hold up.

Everton only ever wanted £25million and to date we have offered £20million. Quite how that bid is set out in terms how many payments over how many decades is anyone’s business.

Money is invariably the issue and as ever, we’re being precious over it.

On a personal note, it’s occurred to me that it might be an idea to give Barkley a fair go of it. Opposed to looking for reasons to hang the guy before he’s even put the shirt on.

Suddenly everyone knows more about him than his own mother. He’s thick, can’t really play football and a generally reprehensible human being. Really?

Perhaps some Spurs fans out there might give some thought to not writing the fella off until it is deserved? You’re quick enough to invent reasons why complete garbage like N’Jie and No’Cluedo might come good. Hell, some of you are still unconvinced that signing Sissoko was a bad thing.

Anyway, That’s where the deal is, if you wish to snipe and sharpen your knives based upon nothing, knock yourselves out.

Anyone have any thoughts on Barkley being a long term Dembele replacement? Both strong, direct, and skillful on the ball – I can’t help but think with nurturing Barkley could fulfil the same role, and in turn fix the obvious issue we have whenever Dembele is missing (look at our points per game with and without him over the past 2 seasons)

  • Still Nil Nil July 20, 2017 at 11:34 am

The way levy thrusts players into pochs lap reminds me of the classic footy film ‘Escape To Victory’ whereby the German Camp Commendant (ooh hello sailor) thrusts 3 illness ravaged under nutritioned eastern bloc prisoners who are lice invested at Michael Caine and says ‘Here you go fella’.

Barkley’s a gamble. We’d be buying 24 year old (?) potential. that’s all. £20m is plenty for another (possible) David Bentley.

    • Sexy Beast July 20, 2017 at 11:26 am

The poochmiester might have turned David Bentley into a Rolls Royce 🥊

      • 💋 July 20, 2017 at 11:30 am

I suspect Bentley’s problems were in his own head. At 24 Barkley may have a similar lack of motivation.

I heard that he thought a spider crawled in there.

  • VincentianMagic July 20, 2017 at 11:23 am

If the figure of £25M is true, then that sounds like a decent deal. With the remaining £30M or so Levy has stuffed up his arm sleeve, I suggest making RM a proper offer for Kovecic. By that I mean £30M+.

If Sissy is able to be moved on then perhaps King could be added for his pace and mobility as well as the fact tat he scored 16 goals last season.

Unless Wimmer really wants to go and we can get a good replacement I’d leave well alone for now.

Only other issue is RB. Perreira is a good player and offers more of a like for like regarding pace, so is a nice alternative for Trippier. If we can’t afford him, then I’ll state again that someone like Veltman would do a decent job and can also play CB if required.

So that’s Kovecic and Barkley added to the midfield (competition for Dembele and Eriksen respectively); Perreira or Veltman for Walker (depending on how much we have to spend); and King for Sissy/N’Jie to offer us an additional mobile CF, who can also run the flanks if required and/or play with Kane in the event of a change of formation.

Let’s see what arises, but I’m worried that we are dragging our heels over a few pounds here and there when really we should have one or two players onboard and training with the first team so that we hit the ground running.

Did we not have suitable targets agreed before the end of the season like any normal club?

    • Sexy Beast July 20, 2017 at 11:31 am

      Normal??

      • VincentianMagic July 20, 2017 at 11:33 am

You’re right, we are far from that!

  • Freund or Foe July 20, 2017 at 11:21 am

I was trying to think of the largest transfer fee for a player in the last year of his contract. I seem to remember Van Persie went to Manure with a year left, think it was around 22mil. Any advances on that?

    • UnkleTaff July 20, 2017 at 11:22 am

Doesn’t matter. Pochettino wants him and Levy should just pay whatever money Everton are asking for.

      The bald c*nt.

      • Freund or Foe July 20, 2017 at 11:23 am

Sorry Unk. I`m rather forgetful sometimes.

  • Elevenstonedidiots July 20, 2017 at 11:20 am

I’d much prefer us to be looking at Barkley than bloody Wilf Zaha and Matt Philips (previous window). Signing Barkley would be a statement of intent. When was the last time we poached a top player from one of our rivals? By all accounts the lad wants to play for us. He’s talented, has a bit of a nasty streak and is not the finished article. Poch could really improve him. Who would Spurs fans prefer we go after, disenchanted Real Madrid fringe players? Fuck that. Barkley is the man. I’m just afraid that Levy is going to balls the whole thing up.

  • UnkleTaff July 20, 2017 at 11:15 am

Barkley’s just had a groin operation, by all accounts, and will miss the start of the season.

Common sense dictates that we might as well wait until the end of the window before securing the deal. Everton don’t want him and if he isn’t sold before September his value will fall considerably seeing how his contract runs out next summer. This puts us in a strong bargaining position for a player who is unable to train anyway.

But Levy’s somehow a cunt for not paying over the odds now.

    • Still Nil Nil July 20, 2017 at 11:17 am

The ‘groin operation’ was a circumcision which is part of the deal before he can don a spurs shirt.

      • UnkleTaff July 20, 2017 at 11:21 am

I’ve made my admiration of the player known on here over the past few weeks. If we were only to sign one player this is the one it should be.

I really hope this operation doesn’t scupper the deal.

        • Still Nil Nil July 20, 2017 at 11:25 am

Levy it seems doesn’t usually need too many reasons to scupper a deal.
          I don’t know re Barkley.
On one hand I’m unconvinced an old dog can be taught new tricks (old in this case that he has been around for a while despite his relatively young age) but on the other I do think the coaches at Spurs can polish turds in most cases (there are exceptions and they are immediately given short shrift) as they’ve proved with people like walker etc.
And if Barkley is willing to buy into pics work ethic and concepts then who knows.

I went to Hendon Mags for a few hours, yesterday. Sat in for 5/6 sentencing hearings. Thoroughly depressing. What has one to do to get banged up these days?

Interestingly (for me) not one was British or Irish. By British I mean including those of black, Asian, Chinese etc heritage Most were Somalian. It’s a very small snapshot, but I wonder if you’ve noticed any growth in Somalian gang / criminal activity?

    • 💋 July 20, 2017 at 10:58 am

      To Nilly.

      • Still Nil Nil July 20, 2017 at 11:11 am

        Yes.
But also in the Turkish / Kurdish, Romanian and in fact all areas.
Ducketts common (Turnpike Lane) is run/dominated by a Somalian gangland/Mafia, green lanes and the surrounds by the Turkish mafia, the Russian mafia over see the large Afghan drug importing cartel, the Romanians run the old lady car windscreen washing corp by any major traffic light junction, its crazy out there.

And there’s the travelling community too.

Sounds extreme but it’s honestly carnage on the streets.

Then you have the 20-30 gangs I’ve mentioned previously who vie for the dealing rights after being supplied by the Russian/Afghan suppliers.

That’s without the people trafficking which everybody mentioned above is involved in.

And when they are eventually brought to task the judges slap them on the wrists like naughty boys and tell them not to do it again.

70% of all illegal substances imported into this country are through the hackney/haringey green lanes corridor thru the above mentioned people.

And the government says crimes dropping.

I’ve got some news for you.

It ain’t and the types of crimes are getting more violent and extreme.

        • 💋 July 20, 2017 at 11:20 am

As I thought (how bad it is). The magistrates and district judges are so out of touch with reality its scary. The probation services and and private community service agencies seem to conspire to make things worse. It feels like a scandal, to me.

After our conversation about Crim Def I thought I’d revisit the court. It served to remind me just why I could not do Crim Def Work.

          • Still Nil Nil July 20, 2017 at 11:27 am

            Yeah it’s a shambles.
If you ever walk into a CPS office at a mags court you’ll see just how shit it is.

It’s never ‘what’s the most we can send this cunt down for’ it’s always ‘what can we do to get this NFA’d and chucked out to save time money and effort’.

  • Dan B July 20, 2017 at 10:50 am

I think Barkley could turn out to be an absolute gem. Let Poch have him for a season and I think we would see a really talent. He’s always had natural ability, it’s just his decision making. At the moment you can see he doesn’t quite know whether to pass, or take someone on. Let Poch and Jesus work on him and we’ll see Dele MkII.

    • Camus July 20, 2017 at 10:53 am

  • Still Nil Nil July 20, 2017 at 10:26 am

People go on about this 50+million profit from bonzo.
Since he’s been at Spurs his wages will have amounted to around 30 million.
Plus feeding him, training him, giving him a grace and favour house and car, the cost rises.
And in that time Spurs have won fuck all.
Zero net return on that outlay.
    Not much profit there.

Nilly old bean – spoken like a the thoughtful chap you are. This isn’t Top Trumps and you do not win by shouting. The £50million has been largely squandered before the cheque clears. Focussing on the money is to miss the point.

This is something I believe that Levy fundamentally doesn’t understand. His obsessive behaviour with the net spend demonstrates he should be running a baked bean cannery. Not a football club.

      • 💋 July 20, 2017 at 10:43 am

Is it not 20 million +add ons and 25 million + add ons. Still five million apart but under Everton figure he could cost us 30million plus. Still if your happy to pay that then yeah. The problem with the Croatian guy at mad bid is would he come to us I doubt it

  • Andreas July 20, 2017 at 10:13 am

Bring in Ross, mousse dembele from celtic, and a rightback.
get rid of sissoko, janssen .Job done. Interesting to see walker saying we were not quite good enough to win trophies, maybe he was part of the problem, hate him now, even though he is right

    • Camus July 20, 2017 at 10:15 am

Why would you hate him “even though he is right”?

      • Andreas July 20, 2017 at 10:19 am

Because he left us for a rival. He should have stayed and I don’t like other clubs or players bad mouthing our club, that is for us spurs fans to do

        • Camus July 20, 2017 at 10:21 am

I haven’t seen or heard him bad-mouth us, merely state that he’s confident he can win trophies there.

          • Freund or Foe July 20, 2017 at 10:22 am

            Me neither.

            • 💋 July 20, 2017 at 10:41 am

He’s gone to City because he’s “all about winning trophies”. Not bad mouthing by any means, but what a shame he wasn’t “all about winning trophies” at, and for Spurs.

              • Cornetto July 20, 2017 at 11:00 am

If he wants to win stuff, how about taking some personal responsibility and playing better? Like putting in some decent crosses and not being caught out of position or letting the ball run under your foot? He didn’t take a pay cut to go to Citeh, so lets not pretend that it’s not first and foremost about money. Like all the players who say they want to leave to play CL footie yet every year, yet don’t sign for Celtic….

I don’t begrudge him making a living and the most of his ability but “winning trophies” is not why he’s signed for Citeh.

                • 💋 July 20, 2017 at 11:05 am

We are of one accord. Just one, Cornetto.

          • Andreas July 20, 2017 at 10:39 am

I just don’t like how shit average clubs make us look like mugs cause of oil money.Walker has gone for more money first and foremost, whilst levy thinks players and manager are going to hang around forever.I take insults from previous players badly,
Walker saying stuff about us hurts because our owners aren’t bothered with winning . We need new owners soon.

        • Harry Hotspur July 20, 2017 at 10:41 am

If ‘I want to win stuff’ is bad mouthing then we have very thin skins indeed.

          • Andreas July 20, 2017 at 10:50 am

I have very thin skin indeed, I just want our club to be the best, and when I see clubs with owners backing their managers i ask why won’t our miserable owners back a manager that every top club would love to have. We may never get a manager like Poch for a very long time should he realise that enic are about making money and leaves.

            • Freund or Foe July 20, 2017 at 10:56 am

Now this sort of comment just astounds me. Your belief that you know what ENIC are all about, and Poch hasn`t realised yet. Do you not see how utterly preposterous that sounds?

    • Still Nil Nil July 20, 2017 at 10:16 am

This does annoy me when a player who as part of a team that doesn’t fulfil its objective (Spurs not winning things, the arse out of CL (Sanchez) etc) say they want out to go somewhere to achieve those things.
They should remain to rectify it as they contributed in part to the failure to achieve those things.
      The thick cunts.

      • Camus July 20, 2017 at 10:18 am

If you’re serious, I can’t agree. He could have stayed with us for another 5 years and may not have won a trophy. The odds are greater that he wins a trophy at City, and earns double his money whilst doing so.

        • Still Nil Nil July 20, 2017 at 10:22 am

          Coulda woulda shoulda.
Who knows what could’ve happened in the next 5 years?
I do know Spurs for the past 3 have improved each season and I do think they’ll win a pot this year.
          Who’s to say city will?
          Have they improved?
Just cos they buy players (shed loads at a time) of good quality doesn’t mean they’ll win anything.
What did they win last year?
          Same as Spurs.

          • Camus July 20, 2017 at 10:27 am

How many trophies have City won in the past 10 years? 2 PL titles, 1 FA Cup & 2 League Cups. You know what Spurs have won in that time. We may not like their spend-happy habits but they have won a lot more than us lately. That’s why the odds are much greater that they win another trophy next year. We’re still at the ‘hope’ stage and have the Wembley code to crack too.

            • Still Nil Nil July 20, 2017 at 10:31 am

I don’t disagree with you on your point and I know players transfer, my gripe is as I wrote in the first instance of how players jump ship cos they’ve won nothing when they themselves have been party to that failure and where I would feel personally I owe it to rectify it, they don’t seem to have the same mindset.
              They are all morally corrupt.

              • Harry Hotspur July 20, 2017 at 10:37 am

Players are 100% morally destitute, Nilly. In the main they expect to be worshipped and have trophies placed if not at their feet, then within easy reach.

                • Still Nil Nil July 20, 2017 at 10:44 am

                  Exactly.

What I do like about poch is he won’t allow grandstanding.

Someone mentioned on one of your blogs recently how when given a new contract he rocked up in a swanky car and was told to fuck off home by poch.

At the racists their youngsters are on ridiculous money and seen swanning about in nice cars before they’ve earnt the right to do so.

Bring back the YTS schemes and make them clean the pros boots for £35 a week.

Learn their trade and graft for it to appreciate the riches at the end of it.

Players like graham Roberts, Stuart Pearce and Ian wright I love to watch as they played every game like it was their last having to eke out a living in the real world before making the grade.

They’re mentality on the pitch resembled this upbringing.

    • Dan B July 20, 2017 at 10:57 am

Not sure Dembele would be a good addition. Scottish league is very different….as is the championship…David Nugent and Gregorsz Rasiak couldn’t handle PL. Giorgios Samaras and Gary Hooper scored goals for fun in Scotland but never did it in England.

Just look at the players Dembele is playing with….Scott Sinclair, Kolo Toure, Scott Brown.

I think if he was genuinely that good he would have been snapped up by a PL club by now. Plus Celtic would want mad money for him.

A lot of people saying Ross will replace Dembele eventually, when he actually mainly plays as a 10.

    No. of games 16/17:
    Attacking Midfield (behind striker): 20
    Right Midfield: 9
    Central Midfield: 7
    Right Wing: 1
    Left Midfield: 1

So out of 38 games he played just 7 as a CM. He also payed just once in Dele’s position.

  • Still Nil Nil July 20, 2017 at 10:08 am

I have decreed that if Barkley signs, his nickname shall be ‘Hot Chip’.

That is because he looks like he is eating a hot chip.

    As does Seamus Coleman.
He shall be called ‘Hot Chip II’.

It must be something in the Mersey river water that gives them that appearance of struggling to eat a Hot Chip.

I don’t believe the £25m price tag. It may end up at that level, but there is no way Everton started at that point – hence why this deal is not done.

    • Bonyspur July 20, 2017 at 10:02 am

Levy’s negotiations are why the deal isn’t done, Everton could be holding out for £5 and Levy would offer £2.50!! Haha

      • Freund or Foe July 20, 2017 at 10:10 am

Thanks, I was getting desperate for the truth.

Or Everton really are/were looking for £50m. If £25m was what they wanted from the start they would have had half a dozen offers by now. The price drops as the windows goes on – however Levy risks other parties entering the race the longer he waits. It’s a game of chicken really.

        • modricbigtoe July 20, 2017 at 10:25 am

he’s just had an operation too, that doesn’t help the buyer make a decision either

    • modricbigtoe July 20, 2017 at 10:23 am

      exactly

  • Bonyspur July 20, 2017 at 10:00 am

I don’t rate him that highly personally, and our midfield is already so strong. I get annoyed as we always seem to fail to strengthen the right area. We need more support for Kane. When Kane’s injured we do get by, granted, but it always feels touch and go during his absence. Happy with Trippier so not bothered about Walker’s departure. Could use another left winger I guess

  • JuandeInternational July 20, 2017 at 9:59 am

“Quite how that bid is set out in terms how many payments over how many decades is anyone’s business.”

Everton would send a bloke on a bike round once a week to collect £1and Donna Cullen would say Daniel isn’t here right now, only for the bloke from Everton to hear Levy whispering in the background “tell him we’ll pay two quid next week”.

Introducing ‘Rising Cramp’ a new situation comedy starring Daniel Levy as Rigsby the football club chairman who wears moth eaten cardigans and feigns heart attacks when money is discussed.

Donna Marie Cullen plays Ms Joans, the femme fatale and the only one who knows where Rigsby keeps his stash of big white fivers.

Each week a new character arrives at the club looking to do business, but all they find is a man rejected by the society he craves acceptance from, drowning in his own avarice and despair. Whilst smiling. Endlessly fucking smiling.

My dad’s dinner suit was made in a day when we were in Hong Kong.

Trouble is the tailor had more lawyers than sewing machines and swore blind he never stipulated which day. It took 3 days in the end.

  • John Flynn July 20, 2017 at 9:56 am

I don’t see him as the best option for us , I think the boy kovacic would be better and has a higher ceiling , however should he come and I expect him to , I think he will do well and would probably get back into the England team under poch

    • Devonshirespur July 20, 2017 at 10:00 am

I would see Barkers as an Alli alternative and Kovacic as an Eriksen alternative

      • AccringtonSpurs July 20, 2017 at 10:11 am

Kovacic is mainly a CM and DM.

        No. of games 16/17:
        Central Midfield: 26
        Defensive Midfield: 10
        Attacking Midfield: 1

So, not really competition for Eriksen…

  • East Stand July 20, 2017 at 9:55 am

Kelvin McKenzie has bought his Wembley season ticket already…

  • Sharon Darch July 20, 2017 at 9:54 am

Be a fantastic addition and can play several roles along side Wanyama if Dembele was unavailable or in one of the attacking 3 behind Harry with Ali and Eriksen. With a manager that believes in him he’d bring the best out of the lad whose only 23 a consistent premier player big yes from me. All this pish about Man U and Chelsea interested is pish as well

  • modricbigtoe July 20, 2017 at 9:54 am

I struggle to see him getting a game if all are fit, we do need a player up top to support Kane who is better than Vincent more than we need a Barkley type player. I am not convinced Barkley will be better than Winks in the long run. So I can see why we don’t want to pay over the odds and help Everton out with their problem. I like Barkley very much but not paying over the odds, he has just had an operation by the way!

    • East Stand July 20, 2017 at 9:57 am

I reckon he’ll compete with Son to start but I see what you mean.

I’m personally a bit concerned that Barkley is a replacement for Ali…

  • Camus July 20, 2017 at 9:54 am

It would be a shame to miss out over a meagre £5mill, wouldn’t it? Watch this space.

    • modricbigtoe July 20, 2017 at 9:54 am

the gap is not 5 mill, it’s much higher

    • Freund or Foe July 20, 2017 at 9:56 am

It would be a shame for Everton to lose 20mil because they wanted an meagre extra 5mil, wouldn`t it?

      • Camus July 20, 2017 at 10:13 am

        “Hello? Is that Saido?”

  • Nick July 20, 2017 at 9:53 am

Seems THBN were correct that terms have been agreed.I quite like him as a player although youth is wasted on the young & his temperament is questionable but like Alli I don’t think a little fire is a bad thing.Hes pro active rather than reactive & always forward looking.Warnock doesn’t feel he can be trained to be an all round midfielder so maybe not the Dembele replacement but more of an Eriksen/Alli alternative?

  • East Stand July 20, 2017 at 9:52 am

I do love a 60’s shopfront HH, great work.

  • Freund or Foe July 20, 2017 at 9:52 am

Everton won`t budge from their 25mil valuation, and we won`t budge from our 20mil. Surely that means both sides are holding the deal up?

    • Camus July 20, 2017 at 9:52 am

      Deal or no deal?

      • Freund or Foe July 20, 2017 at 9:54 am

There`s a solution, but who will blink first?

        • Devonshirespur July 20, 2017 at 9:56 am

          Levy has no eyelids

          • Harry Hotspur July 20, 2017 at 10:53 am

This was due to clerical error during his circumcision.

    • Devonshirespur July 20, 2017 at 9:56 am

you’d think that if it was that close in valuation terms both parties would meet in the middle quite quickly. They get the dosh, we get the player pre-season, everyones a winner.

I guess the fact he wont walk in to our first XI means we’re not acting desperate to sign him, but i always think that it takes new players time to adapt and get Poch-fit, even if they are used to the league.

  • Matt July 20, 2017 at 9:52 am

Agree. Stuff on social media just gets repeated and becomes “fact”. He’s got an attitude problem hasn’t he, he’s a bit lazy…::Except if you read what his previous managers and those who know him have written he’s apparently a very hard worker, good trainer and worked incredibly hard to overcome a potential career threatening injury. I think he’s a better option than Siggy. Siggy probably safer but there’s a chance that Barkley could be a lot better. Poch obviously thinks so and he actually knows quite a bit about this sort of thing.

    • Freund or Foe July 20, 2017 at 9:53 am

I`d take Barkley over Siggy, even if the asking price were the same.

      • modricbigtoe July 20, 2017 at 9:55 am

        so would I

      • Matt July 20, 2017 at 9:57 am

Me too. Another thing, we don’t have many people who can dribble and beat a man. Barkley can and that opens up defences. Poch can teach him to judge when to do it better. Also if you happen to have Dieryama behind you it helps…..

        • Freund or Foe July 20, 2017 at 9:58 am

          Very reassuring.

        • Devonshirespur July 20, 2017 at 9:58 am

          I prefer Wanbele

  • Karnage July 20, 2017 at 9:48 am

It will be a perfect addition. I see him as the long term successor to Dembele, who also in his early years didn’t really seem o get played anywhere regularly. Any 2 from Winks Dier and Barkley would be extremely good back up to Wanyama and Demeble (who has dodgy ankles and needs resting).

  • Paulspurs July 20, 2017 at 9:41 am

Harry I reckon he will come to spurs and will be a great buy
