Some astonishingly narrow minded responses from too many sectors of ‘social media’ this afternoon. I mean, we all like a joke, but some of the screams of mock desperation and bile were just a bit too much. Manchester City fielded a pretty strong starting XI in their game, and they barely blazed a trail against an equally modest opposition.

Intermittent South East Asian type monsoon weather left the pitch looking more like an It’s A Knockout set than a venue for an allegedly prestigious football tournament. There was more of ‘the show must go on’ about this game than felt comfortable.

The key thing to remember here is that preseason form for us, rarely heralds the Premier League form to come. And on that pitch, if we’d have won 10-0 it wouldn’t have been reason to buy a season ticket order an open top bus.

My feeling, looking at the expression on AVB’s face when the teams went back into the locker rooms knowing that the game was going ahead, is that this was an obligation rather than something to draw too much from. So what of our lot that took part, what did we learn?

Business as usual seems a fair enough description. Bonzo was good and gormless in equal measure. Dawson was awesome, he looked like a kid off a Daz doorstep challenge Ad after the first 5 minutes. Huddlestone is detached to the point of autism and surely can’t be indulged any further.

The Sky commentator actually echoed the half crazed romantics amongst you. ‘He’s a great shot on him, but his strike record of late has been less than impressive.’ Please, he’s yet to hit double figures for his entire bloody career. Joke.

Elsewhere we looked, yet again like a side that lacked anyone with creative brain.

Adebayor seemed to be in great form both before and during the game. If we’re lucky, we might just get a season out of him again. Defoe was extraordinary. If your idea of extraordinary is still refusing to pass and wanting to shoot even when hustled within feet over a corner flag.

Sunderland allegedly have been on a course of ‘intensive fitness training.’ It showed. But there’s no need to throw the baby out with the bathwater …just yet.

Can anyone out there tell me if Soldado has signed and passed his medical?

  • jayco July 25, 2013 at 3:10 pm

Nothing should be read into the game against Sunderland (although we were crap). It was merely a game to gain fitness and showcase some of the players we are looking to sell – Gomez, Hudd, Dempsey etc They clearly love being at spurs as after that toilet stuff yesterday i doubt even Barnet would fancy any of those three.
As agreed with many above, now is the time for Levy/Lewis to spend the money on 2/3 world class players and more importantly to come out and shout as loud as possible that Real Madrid can go and stick their money where the sun don’t shine – that Bale is staying and report those arrogant paella-muching tosspots to UEFA & FIFA for breaking every football etiquette rule in the book. If any English club behaved as they have we’d have been slung out of European competitions for years.
Soldado & Lopez + a decent LB is all we need. Mr Levy – over to you…Dont let yourself, the club and more importantly the fans…..down.
PS – anyone slating AVB needs their head tested – pure nonsense

  • burnszy only concern July 25, 2013 at 2:00 pm

Pre season… What a load of bollix. Anyone who’s played at any level knows it’s all about the run out. One year Liverpool came over and played us pre season. We drew 1-1 they beat Linfield 8-0. We thought we’d win the league. We got relegated lol

A few player do need to go. I could guy amounts but what the fuck would I know? Jake needs game time.. so he’ll move on.. As does Carroll and I’d let Dempsey go if we get in a striker. Defoe is who he is.. his ridiculous goals to shots ratio makes you hate him. But at the start of last season he carried us on his own.

I love the squad we’re building.. my only concern is Gylf/ Holtby/ Dempsey offer very similar things.. and we went ant bought Chandli.. he’s different… makes no sense.

AVB – slower tempo.. yes. Less creativity in final 3rd but give him back Modric and VDV? See my point? Take the 2 most creative players from any team and they would take at least a season to come to terms with creating goals in a different way.

I like Hudd so fuck ya’ll haters.

  • tms spurs July 25, 2013 at 1:05 pm

the game was never going to be a spectacle in that quagmire granted, but our defensive frailties had nothing to do with the pitch. we saw our fullbacks make the same mistakes during last season, it needs to be sorted, either new defensive coaches or new fullbacks. and as for ade, funny how he plays well when a new deal or threat of the boot is imminent.

  • East Stand July 25, 2013 at 7:35 am

Dagenham Steelworks (pub) would never play in such terrible conditions, they really wouldn’t.

I mean if that were a showcase for English football, turn back the clock 35 years and the conditions were perfect!!

Jumpers for goalposts, a dog turd marks the penalty spot… Etc.

    • East Stand July 25, 2013 at 7:55 am

It was impossible to analyse the players properly in this game Ron but the overall malaise you speak of has been there since the start of last season to me. I think the only cure is to inject flair into the side by way of new signings. As well as the usual names I would out Lenny & Dempsey too and use the cash and wages on someone with more vision and creativity.

We were dull last season apart from you know who, this must change…

      • ronwol196061 July 25, 2013 at 10:37 am

The field was terrible but I have to hand it to Plantar Fasciitis,He had his players ready to play.
This reminds me of the Community Sheild when Alex had his players ready.Alex is a fighter and so is Mr Hilter.
Im trying to figure out what we were doing?
Ok so dont care about the game but try something new. Do you know how many times we kicked the ball up the field?

        • East Stand July 25, 2013 at 1:56 pm

Sadly a familiar sight… A new season, new players and new hopes!!

  • East Stand July 25, 2013 at 1:27 am

More in that Edmonton than the one down the road from WHL i have no doubt!!

Different world now innit… Have i said that already? Fack it must be age.

    • East Stand July 25, 2013 at 1:32 am

Has there ever been a player since Jenas that looks so much like his time at Spurs is up as Hudd?

It’s actually quite sad to see, along with all the trappings like the ‘fro’ and the ‘ink’… Such promise, too much ketchup and hanging out with Azza has taken it’s toll methinks!!

      • ronwol196061 July 25, 2013 at 2:13 am

Hudd really would make a great Championship player

        • johnnyboy July 25, 2013 at 4:25 am

Ronnie i think Hudd would make a great Traffic Cop in the middle of the road just
standing there waving the arms about,Shame but i think his time is up at spurs
the old Dick Turpin Stand and Deliver comes to mind.Do you remember when we
signed john Smith from west ham and also Dennis Bond from watford the same
hopes with these two players but just never made the grade at spurs.

          • ronwol196061 July 25, 2013 at 10:32 am

What is it with us we cannot sell anyone.I mean its true Levy doesnt want to spend too much but nobody wants to buy any of this deadwood for anything more than a choc ice wrapper

    • ronwol196061 July 25, 2013 at 2:16 am

      who? what? Where? When?

      Ive lost track myself

      Who did I watch today?

It looked like like the Dagenham steelworks pub team

  • Edmonton geezer July 25, 2013 at 12:18 am

Im in Vegas….just had a few pints in the Todd English pub with a fellow TH supporter who I met at the bar. He lives in Crouch End. What a pleasure that was for me. I don’t get to meet too many TH fans in Canada. He.carries his Spurs flag with him……hard core dude.

    • ronwol196061 July 25, 2013 at 12:30 am

There is a Spurs Canada in Canada<I think there is still a chapter in Calgary and maybe a few fans in Edmonton

  • ronwol6061 July 24, 2013 at 11:11 pm

From what I saw ES we looked disjointed. Yes we Travelled, jet lag and all but some teams have been winning with Jet lag including Sunderland… They have new players too.
As far as creativity goes you are right but that was the story from last you as you mention. The malaise I saw was of the variety that we saw so many times when we have played mediocre teams. Sunderland upped their game, we lowered ours?

    Whoa fault us that?

    No its early days…..

    • melcyid July 25, 2013 at 12:02 am

Greaves and Gilzean used to skip around defenders in the snow and the mud.

      • ronwol196061 July 25, 2013 at 12:20 am

Greaves used to shoot it and bounce it off the ice,it would hit a corner flag,it would go up about 50 feet swing across hovering over the box for 2 minutes and it come down to Gilzean who glanced it off his head back to Greaves who turned and whacked it on the volley to the back of the net. And once???? No he did that 87 times!!!

        • Essexian July 25, 2013 at 12:23 am

Question I need an answer to RonWol……….Royal Engineers, were they all that?

          • ronwol196061 July 25, 2013 at 12:27 am

Thing my Dad was in that!

I have no idea but I do have some of his medals.
He told me he was iin the Ardennes and when I went to see the Battle of the Bulge he said he was in it.

So I have no idea.I was with John Lennon and company in the 60’s

            • Essexian July 25, 2013 at 1:40 am

And Chapman missed you, and Yoko eh? Glad to know your dad was a better marksman :Amazed: (yeah, I know it’s in poor taste, but what the hell!)

              • ronwol196061 July 25, 2013 at 2:05 am

                You like the Gunners?

                • Essexian July 25, 2013 at 5:46 am

Only if their aims better than Chapmans

        • melcyid July 25, 2013 at 12:44 am

I remember that goal well ,I was in the bottom left hand corner of the Park Lane, It was such an unbelievable goal that I dropped my roasted peanuts :Happy-Grin:

          • ronwol196061 July 25, 2013 at 2:09 am

Mel 80% of the people here have never seen a real goal
I mean remember that one where Greaves did that overhead kick (2 and a half with pike) and it hit the post down that end and ricocheted down the other end and was so hard a shot it ricocheted back over the head of Greaves onto Gilzean who glances it down to er Greaves who overhead kicked it on the volley as it powered into the back of the net It was the third time we saw that that game. You have 4 bags of peanuts that day Mel

            • Frontwheel 2 July 25, 2013 at 11:12 am

Yeah, and Besty used to fuck wimmen at half time in the referees room.

    • East Stand July 25, 2013 at 1:23 am

      Different world now innit…

Yeah Ron, same old in Hong Kong it seems… However, seems like AVB & Baldini are trying to sign any tricky player with a goal that can play in the front three they can lay their hands on. That i like.

      • ronwol196061 July 25, 2013 at 2:12 am

        • East Stand July 25, 2013 at 7:26 am

I’m going to be controversial and say that in a 433 Crouchie would do a job, I certainly think we could have used him last season over Ade. Mind you, Jose Dominguez would have been more useful over Ade as a center forward in some games last season….

          • ronwol196061 July 25, 2013 at 10:43 am

I dont get formations.Somewhere along the line somebody has to create an opening for somebody and that somebody has to be able to go for goal. All the formations mean nowt if a player cant pass or find space or shoot.
Maybe AVB is into formations but we couldnt string too many passes together or have more opportunities in this game.

  • East Stand July 24, 2013 at 10:33 pm

Sounds like a lack of vision, cleverness creativity and flair as usual… We have come to expect this of our play under AVB but at least the signings made or about to be made are flair type forwards. Buy it in if you can’t get the team to play that way as a unit i suppose?

Hoddle, Gazza, Teddy, Modric, Berba, Ginola, White etc etc.. we tick better with those players anyway, always have done and always will do. Here’s hoping we bring in one or three, perhaps Chadli is one and Fritz is one in the making for a start.

Siggy and Dempsey seem like square pegs in round holes really…

  • Kosher Kid July 24, 2013 at 10:05 pm

Just trawled through this lot. Some good points well made but an awful lot of clap trap too.

For some reason Kyle Naughton has picked up a slagging from one or two punters despite the small fact that he didn’t play today. For what it is worth I think Naughton showed some promise last season when he got a run in the team. He is used at left back, which is an un-natural position for him, but he did ok. Away at Villa he set Defoe up with a lovely defence splitting pass. His passing is decent and perhaps he should be give a run in the side at right back the next time his mate, Kyle Walker, costs us a goal with a sloppy back pass or gets caught in possession.

Huddlestone took a poor touch for the first goal but, I forgive him for that because his touch is usually superb and that pass to Defoe today was Hoddle-esque. 40 yards, to the edge of the Sunderland box, between two defenders, at Defoe’s feet. Again, for what it is worth, I thought Huddlestone was superb, away at Basle, when he reverted to centre back, after Vertonghen was sent off. I would like to see Huddlestone remain in the squad because he has ability and can do things others cant. If Hudd was used as a covering centre back it might be worth sending Caulker back out on loan. He seems to slip under the radar when it comes to criticism but he is still making errors. He mis-judged the bounce of a long ball today but we got away with it because Daws wiped his arse.

Someone blamed Danny Rose for the Wes Brown headed second goal today but, I am pretty sure Rose was on the opposite post, his job. Not sure why there was no defender by the post that the header went past on it’s way into the net. Rose will be ok at left back, especially in a 4-3-3.

From todays starting 11 I am hoping that Gomes, Parker and Defoe are the players that are moved on. Age has caught up with Jermaine and Scotty and Gomes is Gomes. Caulker needs to go back out on loan as does Tom Carroll. I don’t think Andros Townsend is good enough for Spurs although he could do a job in the prem for someone. My guess is he will end up at West Ham and score against us every time we play them but not in any other games.

If everyone was fit and available I can only see Walker, and Adebayor being in our strongest team. Dawson, Lennon and Siggurdson wont be far away. I am not sure what will happen to Dempsey this season. He hasn’t done a lot wrong but, he is unpopular with the support and competition is increasing within the squad. Be shrewd to keep him until January, to see how new players settle, and if we want to sell him in the window, someone fighting relegation will probably pay over the odds to sign him. West Ham for Clint too!

Rose should be given a run in the side at left back and use Benny as cover in case he bottles it. If Rose steps up great, if not Benny is reliable.

    • melcyid July 24, 2013 at 11:59 pm

Benny is a better all round player than rose and is a team player with a bit of vision going forward.

    • East Stand July 25, 2013 at 7:46 am

Over analysing such a game and in those conditions is a complete waste of time. Anyone who wants to judge players properly had better wait until firstly its competitive and the players are match fit and secondly not played on a pitch that would never see a match normally…. I commend your support of the players Kosher but anyone who has judged them based on that game alone is an idiot and should be ignored.

  • Paul B July 24, 2013 at 8:57 pm

Please, get real guys / girls. We are merely warming up for real thing. Bale will stay, the reporters will have to re-ink their pens and focus on another real story.

By the way, I am a very happy Spurs fan in the know ! 14 days and see if you agree. Exciting times! I now know what Paulinho was referring to when he said he signed because of the Spurs ambition. Watch this space !!!!! Changing times indeed!!!! 🙂

      Stop it you tease.

  • RB July 24, 2013 at 8:45 pm

We were shit boring last season and will be shit boring this season #avbout

  • elfranklins July 24, 2013 at 8:44 pm

A quagmire of a pitch, a less than important fixture and the look of a team that has ‘just got out of bed’ which in terms of the new season they just have. I wouldn’t draw anything from a pre season display such as this, people who dwell too much on it need to ‘Chill Winston’ before breaking out the Bren gun!

  • ronwol6061 July 24, 2013 at 8:28 pm

    Automatic responses you can use

It’s only early in the season

    It’s only the Euro

    They are young

    Wait it’s not even Christmas

    They are old

    It’s not even Easter

    God, the injuries, the schedule

How about giving us 5 minutes if quality whole we are waiting?

  • ronwol6061 July 24, 2013 at 7:42 pm

You have a squad not for these games but for the rigorous season. Players get injured and you need able players who can pull a few passes together and Mark occasionally.
Practice is what you do when you are not playing games.
You fly out to China to sell your brand. Lots of fans from all over Asia come to support you and you play like a bunch of walkers.
Sorry no need to win the double or even win but give a good account of yourself in respect to the fans.

    • ronwol6061 July 24, 2013 at 7:45 pm

      Wr only had one walker….
      The others were crawling

      • Boy Charioteer July 24, 2013 at 8:22 pm

Weren’t we any good then? By the way Ron, great stuff from you on the previous subject. Wisdom. I’m still a bit sad though that it came to this. I’m quite fond of everyone really.

        • Spurstacus July 24, 2013 at 8:34 pm

Yerp. Very sensible Ron (yes I did say that), and agree with above expressed sentiments, (in part).

        • ronwol6061 July 24, 2013 at 8:37 pm

BC,I don’t expect us to do great, it’s pre season but give us SOMETHING. The boys haveto earn respect not be given it.

On he other note. Thanks. It’s Harry’s nickel but things can work out with some rationality and reason.
But Harry call the shots. So you have to play by the boundaries he sets.
It’s not easy to keep something going but he takes his chances. It’s a great site and I think everyone should be open for the conversation.

      • hk_yod July 25, 2013 at 2:29 am

To be honest I think AVB came to the tournament with a few things in mind in terms of who and what he wanted to see. Ultimately we ended up with heavy rain and the pitch was swamped – not ideally-suited to a fast paced, intricate passing team. When it came down to it AVB probably didn’t want the players breaking their ankles in an attempt to play their usual game. It’s disappointing but in retrospect it’s fair considering Vertonghen became a victim of the pitch.

As I said in an earlier post, the local fans appreciate the rare opportunity to see their team, or in fact any big team play – win, lose or draw. Having a presence, meeting the fans, etc. has a big impact. It might sound sad, but it brings an air of excitement to a country that loves football but usually only gets to see it on TV.

  • Essexian July 24, 2013 at 7:41 pm

Real Madrid 1 Southend United 1, I wonder what that means for the season ahead for those two?

    • Bobby July 24, 2013 at 7:43 pm

Means Southend should definitly sign Bale.

      • Essexian July 24, 2013 at 7:54 pm

Yeah, I reckon you could be right-C’mon you Shrimygalactico’s

        • Bobby July 24, 2013 at 8:39 pm

Could you imagine Phil Brown laying into the galatico’s at half time on the pitch!

          • Essexian July 25, 2013 at 12:14 am

Oh of course, but only this time it’ll be get up you lazy bastards, Ii know Southend has officially the best totty in the whole of the UK, but we’ve got to get of the beach, stop ogling and get playing!

  • thfcjimmy July 24, 2013 at 6:43 pm

AVB is a great manager, much better than harry, also bale loves him as well, if AVB goes, bale will follow, we’re not far away, just shift some deadwood and buy a top class goal scorer like dzeko, mandzukic or soldado and we will finish in top 4!!

    • TMWNN July 24, 2013 at 7:17 pm

Redknapp is scum, but to say AVB is a great manager is over egging it. If it were’t for the world class Bale, last season would have been very average. We weren’t a one man team, but we weren’t far off it. AVB still has a lot to prove, and if lowball Levy finally stumps up for a striker, CL football is the very minimum next season. If he’s great, we need to see some silverware. The dull football that was often served up last season was nowhere near good enough, and if we’re to be taken seriously, people need stop kidding themselves that players like Dempsey and Huddlestone are anywhere near good enough.

      • Essexian July 24, 2013 at 7:37 pm

      • Bobby July 24, 2013 at 7:40 pm

He’s not a great manager, he’s a very naughty boy.

I don’t think anybody is kidding themselves that Dempsey & Hudd are good enough. Even Hudd’s agent can’t whip up a media frenzy over his availability!

Feel a bit sorry for Demp$. Not a striker, not a midfielder and not in the same class as Sheringham. He would complement the right guy it just wasn’t ‘pingfo’ and ‘absent ade’ last year.

You’re right about silverware but there are a lot of cash splurgers in the Prem now and we’re still some way off. Look at the Arse, they can’t win anything and they’ve been top 4 for 16 years.

AVD needs to show more next season like any manager would and hopefully Baldini hits the ground running with a few more promising signings.

All in all it’s going to be a massive season for Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool, City and the Arse. We start well and hopefully we’ll have the quality and lack of serious injuries to finish top 4.

It’s going to be an exciting season! Except if you’re an Everton or Stoke supporter.

  • Stevie 264 July 24, 2013 at 6:42 pm

Today we where missing almost all our starters.

I think maybe judge at peak fitness and full compliment of players.

  • TheCincinnatiYid July 24, 2013 at 6:26 pm

Sunderland had something to prove. Spurs did not. Pre season is pre season. Jan should get well and Levy needs to get off his fat ass and do his job.

    • ronwol6061 July 24, 2013 at 7:34 pm

Of course Tottenham have something to prove.

  • BrizzleSpur July 24, 2013 at 6:15 pm

Can’t believe some of the ‘flapping’ going on after the match. Childish is what it is. Pre-season Shmee-season.
It was a day out for some of the guys who haven’t a hope of featuring and a chance to “run about a bit” for some of the first team. How does anyone truly believe that this was a ‘competitive’ match?

Vertonghen getting injured is the only thing worth griping about. Get well soon, Super Jan.

  • Frontwheel 2 July 24, 2013 at 6:10 pm

Agree with you about Ade,thought he looked great, what a result if we could get a season with him playing as if he’s interested.

    • Mike (the other one) July 24, 2013 at 8:15 pm

He`d need to be on something.

      • Spurstacus July 24, 2013 at 8:27 pm

He is! A freakin sh*t load of charitable donations.

  • milky bar yid July 24, 2013 at 6:06 pm

Lordy, clearly a man with similar views as myself. Anyone who had the pleasure (!) of sitting through some of the tripe served up last season (waiting for Bale to do something) will realise what we mean. He didnt have to change much….harry left a great squad with a refreshing style of play which made us a favourite for neutrals to watch….now even I am bored watching Spurs. Chess-like slow shit

  • hoofing July 24, 2013 at 5:18 pm

Some of the squad are going to be employed elsewhere soon. Its a pants tournament with no meaning. Its an auction for the dross also. Kick off against the East Croydon mob is what counts first. Will AVB loose sleep? Yes as his pitch for Hudd to get on his bike at 5 mil went down to 4 mil. Hudd and Paulinho in the same breath……………no thanks. It was a nothing game so I wont try to get something out of it.

  • TriniSpurs July 24, 2013 at 5:04 pm

On your point HH, I can’t remember the details but we beat Inter comprehensibly at WHL and I believe drew with Real away, tore apart some other notable team in one pre-season, and went on to finish 7th or lower that season.

  • ronwol6061 July 24, 2013 at 5:03 pm

I accept that the field and the blah blah……

We should maybe have neaten Colchester before we start the campaign

  • Mr Spiggott July 24, 2013 at 4:54 pm

    Dear Mr Levy,

Given the debacle we’ve just had to sit through in a pointless rainy mud strewn field on the other side of the planet, can I recommend that at this stage next year, in order to afford soldado’s buy out fee, that we play Somme United and Glastonbury FC ? The savings in airfare alone will provide you with the funds you need.

    • Deuce4prez July 24, 2013 at 5:23 pm

We are probably getting loads of cash for this trip to Asia

  • UnkleKev July 24, 2013 at 4:37 pm

No mention of Dempsey in your summary H? Hardly surprising given that when he wasn’t conceding possession he was his usual anonymous self.

Doubtless the stats merchants will be on hand later to tell me how wrong I am.

    • UnkleKev July 24, 2013 at 9:05 pm

Would whoever gave the thumbs down here care to enlighten us as to what he or she saw Dempsey do that had a positive influence on today’s game?

      • UnkleKev July 24, 2013 at 10:22 pm

  • Mr Spiggott July 24, 2013 at 4:31 pm

I know I know we can’t read too much into a game in the mud and rain, the pitch was poor, yadda yadda yadda. But tottingham lost a game of football so I have temporary depression.

Ah. Glenn Hoddle punditry on barca vs bayern that’ll do it. :Movie-Time:

  • Lordy July 24, 2013 at 4:30 pm

How people still support AVB is beyond me , we finished lower than we did the season before playing worse football.
The lack of CL football means that the boy Bale (remember the player you said wasn’t world class and wasn’t doing enough for the team last season) is going to leave and yet Spurs fans are still happy with AVB, astonishing!
Seems like a lovely fella sure but i don’t want him ruining my football team.
His achievement is winning a league an cup in a country with club football on a par with Scotland. Think of managing Celtic with Moutinho, Hulk and Falcao (players he didn’t sign).

    • hk_yod July 24, 2013 at 5:09 pm

First season. Record points total. ‘Nuff said.

      • Lordy July 24, 2013 at 5:13 pm

        5th not 4th ’nuff said

        • hk_yod July 24, 2013 at 5:22 pm

If you were trying to demonstrate small-mindedness, I would suppose so! Let’s bring ‘Arry back. He did a remarkable job at QPR last season.

          • Lordy July 24, 2013 at 5:34 pm

and yet he done a better job at Spurs

            • Jay July 24, 2013 at 5:40 pm

That’s why he got the sack, right?

              • Lordy July 24, 2013 at 5:45 pm

so your saying AVB has done a better job? finishing 5th and being knocked out of the cups by Norwich and Leeds? your deluded but you all you Harry haters got your wish, welcome to the downward slope. I bet you were the same lot singing Bale plays on the left when Harry was in charge yet it was ok when AVB let him roam. Its one thing getting rid of Harry but employing AVB is another self indulgent Levy balls up.

                • Essexian July 24, 2013 at 5:55 pm

                  I like you-you’re funny

                  • BWSpur July 24, 2013 at 7:42 pm

How anyone can suggest bringing Harry back is beyond me. He got us 4th one year and had a good run in the CL, agreed. But he spent a lot of money to do it and after that he intentionally fell asleep at the wheel while whoring himself to the FA which cost us bigtime. He threw away the potential to finish above Arsenal and Chelsea and we ended up 4th and out of the CL. That had huge knock on effects in terms of Arsenal being in a position to spend, us not being in a position to spend, speculation about Bale, players like Hazard choosing Chelski over us (his quote – he was going to join us had we got CL), all sorts. Just when we had a chance to build up some momentum and enter the big leagues he threw it away because he fancied the England job more than the one he was actually being paid to do.

AVB, while far from perfect, actually engages his brain. It wasn’t his squad last year and he still got a record points haul. He’s been able to sign a few players to fit his 4-3-3- system now and, if we get a couple more in, I genuinely think you’ll be eating your words come May.

                • Harry Hotspur July 24, 2013 at 7:27 pm

How many points did AVB get last term?

                • spursgoliath July 24, 2013 at 7:42 pm

Ok, Arry had a better squad with Modric/VdV in top form while AVB had arguably his two most important players to how we actually play (Kaboul and Sandro) out with injury for long periods, had to bed in a new keeper and about 6 other first teamers, and then you had the Ade debacle (African nations, lack of form, etc).

AVB is being linked with the likes of PSG and Barcelona…Arry has sunk so low ven the media don’t bother getting soundbites from him anymore. He’s on the scrapheap now, great that he had 2 or 3 decent seasons but he is yesterdays man.

        • Jamie July 24, 2013 at 5:58 pm

Chelsea spent £100m net last summer.

          We didn’t have £100m.

          Boo hoo!

          • Lordy July 24, 2013 at 6:13 pm

            Arsenal didnt spend 100 million

    • Dan Mac July 25, 2013 at 9:29 am

He got the most points he we have EVER had, the fact we finished lower was due to Arsenal’s 10 game winning streak to finish the season! we lost 2 of our last 22 games – mate, you really need to think about this crap before you write it

  • Mr Spiggott July 24, 2013 at 4:25 pm

Sunderlands left back wasn’t bad was he ?

Is he allergic to chickens ?

  • PAC July 24, 2013 at 4:15 pm

Bloody Right Harry. I’m over here HK and AVB’s still the best news in years, if we’d just get behind him, rather than hitting him every time our heroes make the mistakes they were born with.

Bored rigid of arguing with brethren / strangers at The Lane. Never mind online.

New Blood Please // COYS !

  • dingbatfromcanada July 24, 2013 at 4:15 pm

It was a pretty shabby show, but I think Old Man Friedel deserves an honourable mention for that one top corner save. Made him look like a much safer backup than Gomez.

    • Ainger July 25, 2013 at 12:14 am

The game’s result doesn’t mean a thing, basically our subs and reserves only lost by 2 goals to Sunderland’s strongest team, next time we play them we’ll have Bale (still please God) Chadli,Dembele,Paulinho,Sandro,Lloris,B.A.E or a new LB and one or two new strikers,so 8 possibly 9 changes from this game and the 3-1 result will be reversed or even worse for Sunderland,So don’t panic yet! COYS

  • James July 24, 2013 at 4:11 pm

While Adebayor did a lot of running around and tracking back, he did nothing that suggested we should keep him

      Or rely on him

    • Dan Mac July 25, 2013 at 9:27 am

Because he has an opinion – and one that you can’t ignore either. We did very well but the entertainment factor was reduced last year. I personally always wanted this – it’s how successful teams generally have to play, tactical and slow at times but although I am happy, I do see his point.

  • Matt July 24, 2013 at 4:03 pm

Social media should not be allowed to be quoted.

    • dancingbarber July 24, 2013 at 4:08 pm

      Pardon ?

  • milky bar yid July 24, 2013 at 3:58 pm

The football under Harry was a pleasure to watch at times………..I can count on half a hand the times I can say that under AVB. Last season, aside from Bale’s one man show, was tedious, chess-like and so far off what I would class as entertainment. If we would have got CL then you could have argued the fact it was all worthwhile. …………we didnt

    • Essexian July 25, 2013 at 5:51 am

Is this Milky Bar past it’s sell by date?

  • Phil McAvity July 24, 2013 at 3:57 pm

I have to admit that after seeing the state of the pitch I wouldn’t have played any of my good players either.

  • Chris July 24, 2013 at 3:55 pm

Your description of Hudd was spot on. He would look “off the pace” playing for Spurs Legends! So to play him alongside GI Joe 360 was a schoolboy error. I actually forgot Dempsey was playing. Things will improve when Kaboul, Sandro, Paulinho, Chadli and Holtby return, and hopefully Townsend and Carroll will get more game time. Today just highlighted which players we need to get rid of.

  • ufluckinplick July 24, 2013 at 3:54 pm

AVB is in The Old China Hand, just give me the word H and his a goner.

  • fredrik July 24, 2013 at 3:52 pm

    Any insider on the Soldadosituation?

  • dancingbarber July 24, 2013 at 3:51 pm

Yeah H the whole thing was a joke – apart from the injury to Vertongan. Thought Danny Rose did OK along with a few others including Ade who tried to stay on his feet beyond the call of duty. Daws of course did not stay on his feet during a MOM performance, but blocked most shots while imitating a speedboat on Lake Windermere.

At the end of last season Gareth Bale scored some sensational goals whenever he got a bit of space he unleashed a shot that always seemed to go in the net. Brilliant we all agreed.

When JD ,a striker, finds or tries to find a bit of space and he unleashes a shot that somehow misses or is saved or blocked we all declare him selfish. Funny innit.

Lets all hope they get back home without further injury.

Soldlado will join us on 31st August for the bargain price of 39.5p…………Levy succeeds again we’ll cry.

    • Canadian Chris July 24, 2013 at 4:14 pm

Can’t believe you didn’t watch Rose play the whole game…
He made two mistakes that cost us two goals!
      Didn’t win the header – 2nd goal
Played everyone onside – 3rd goal

Yes Huddlestone gave up the 1st goal with a poor touch but he was the only midfielder looking like he wanted to make the pass to unlock Sunderland’s defence.
      He has to stay..
      That said.
      Parker $2m
      Livermore $3m
      Naughton $5m
      Dempsey $5m
      Gomes $2m
Ade $5m….although he was good today…needs to get in th box more after creating the initial link up

Lots of wages off the books and some cash in to buy a striker

      • dancingbarber July 24, 2013 at 4:24 pm

Yeah you’re right Rose was crap……….just forgave him for the surreal pitch.

And you’re right about Huddlestone always making passes, sometimes even to a team mate, provided he didn’t have to run too far.

Like the thought of selling some players, if only we could find someone who wants to buy them.

      • UnkleKev July 24, 2013 at 4:34 pm

Finally, someone who actually watched Huddlestone play and who isn’t just regurgitating a blinkered and prejudiced view. Up until they scored he was pretty much running the game. Some of his passing was, as usual, sublime, but once the goal went in his head seemed to drop and we lost the initiative.

Adebayor looked good, too. If (and it’s a big if) he can build on the promise of today I’d be more than happy for him to stick around for another year. I’d certainly choose to keep him over Defoe if we had to keep one of them.

        • Bobbles July 24, 2013 at 11:18 pm

So many people on the ‘sell hudd, Parker and Livermore’ vibe. Lets say all 3 go for £10m, who steps in when Dembele, Sandro or Pauline get injured for 3 months?

I think hudd and Parker are extremely capable squad members.

  • richspurs July 24, 2013 at 3:50 pm

just a widow dressing exercise I suppose

    • ronwol196061 July 24, 2013 at 3:53 pm

Stevenage,Fulham,Watford all came to mind watching that. Those places are much closer.
What did we need to go to China for??? To embarass ourselves?

      • Jay July 24, 2013 at 3:55 pm

Supposedly marketing. Could have done without the actual match though.

      • hk_yod July 24, 2013 at 5:02 pm

I was at the game and you’d be surprised how many fans Spurs have out here. Spurs had the whole crowd on their side and the fans have loved every minute, from the open training and autographs, to cheering them on in the rain. Definitely not the right conditions for the team that was played today and definitely could have done without Jan’s injury. But no one minds whether we win or lose in HK, they just appreciate the opportunity to see their team play. Let’s face it, China is the biggest market in the World.

        • UnkleKev July 24, 2013 at 5:14 pm

“Let’s face it, China is the biggest market in the World.”

Hmm. And not a Chinaman to be seen in the team. Makes you think, doesn’t it?

          • hk_yod July 24, 2013 at 5:26 pm

            Not really…

Don’t really care about the result just hope Verts is ok.

  • sybrian July 24, 2013 at 3:44 pm

    Sell Naughton £5m
    Parker £2m
    Huddlestone £5m
    Dempsey £5m
    Adebayor £5 m

BUY Soldado £25 m actual cost nil wages also well paid for!!

    • Phil McAvity July 24, 2013 at 3:52 pm

Whilst I admire and agree with your sentiment, your maths is about as good as we played today!

    • Bobby July 24, 2013 at 3:55 pm

This isn’t Football Manager. Or maybe it is in your head.

Who’s going to pay 5m for Hudd apart from maybe Mr. Kipling as sponsorship. Any forget Ade’s fee, it’s the eye watering wages you have to factor into the equation.

Naughton hasn’t had a chance yet so not sure why you’re jettisoning him already.

      Give Peace A Chance

      • UnkleKev July 24, 2013 at 4:30 pm

Stoke paid £10m for Crouch so I don’t think getting someone to pay £5m for Huddlestone would be at all difficult. In fact, I’d go so far as to say £5m for Tom would be something of a bargain.

        • Bobby July 24, 2013 at 5:06 pm

It would be a hell of a bargain. For us.

Instead of a fee I’d leave crumbs outside the trainning centre and lead him away somewhere where his pitiful goal return and speed would be appreciated.

He’s old hat, like Jenas and Defoe. We need new hats.

    • Lordy July 24, 2013 at 5:14 pm

good idea but cant see us getting 5m for Naughton

    • HalfTimeBenchDuties July 24, 2013 at 9:46 pm

$5m for Ade? Don’t forget his first season at new club should be worth at least $15m !

  • spurstough July 24, 2013 at 3:42 pm

I would have been more worried if we won to be honest. Lets face it, we have bigger fish to fry but for sunderland……

    • ronwol196061 July 24, 2013 at 3:51 pm

When you buy a piece of Halibut you better know how to cook it.If you dont know its best to try a piece of rock or something less expensive to test. If the test fish you friy tastes like shit I would try again before you buy the Halibut.

      • ronwol196061 July 24, 2013 at 3:51 pm

so I am not saying AVB out as much as Halibut out

    • thebunt July 24, 2013 at 5:26 pm

Get Levy out he is holding us back and it was him who cost us a top four finish due to him refusing to buy a top striker last season, anything is better than those two so called forwards we have. Its breaking my heart watching our targets go by.
