REAL MADRID TEAM NEWS: Navas, Achraf, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo, Casemiro; Modric, Kroos, Isco, Ronaldo, Benzema. Subs: Casilla, Nacho, Theo, Lucas V, M.Llorente, Asensio, Ceballos.

TOTTENHAM TEAM NEWS: Lloris, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Sanchez, Aurier, Sissoko, Dier, Winks, Eriksen, Kane, Llorente. Subs: Vorm, Foyth, Trippier, Rose, Walker-Peters, Son, Goergiou

Has Poch has lost his mind playing two upfront in a side that is fundamentally opposed in every fibre of its DNA to playing two upfront?

Sissoko, Dier and Winks versus one of the best sides in the world. Mmmnn.

MAJOR CONCERNS: What Bench? We have no bench. We is benches, pilgrims. You can see why Rose travelled. Had it not been him than one of Poch’s kids could have well been drafted in.

Agggggggh!

In my ever so umble opinion they were all heroes last night. Some may have not risen to the occasion as much as others but I was proud of them, one and all.

    • legendary greavesy October 18, 2017 at 10:17 am

Exactly Andy !!! The team plan and discipline shown was another case of how Poch has his players playing and believing !! When Winksy went for that run lost the ball and they created a chance he was quickly told by the rest to keep the discipline and like a man he took it !! That’s what I’m liking about this squad certainly being moulded in Pochs philosophy !!!

  • legendary greavesy October 18, 2017 at 9:45 am

In case I’m late for this blog in reply to Acc Spur comment on Llorente I think you rather missed the point of his selection where he played in behind kane was also to stop either centre halves pushing forward into the midfield creating any decent attacks from the back quite frankly he did that superbly as it was very evident that both saw him as a threat evidence to this is when he was subbed Casemero made more forward advances in the last 10 min than all game ?? Some here criticise his arrival well Blind Man Freddy could see his worth last night !!! In Poch we TRUST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He may have been employed to do a job last night – it’s what he doesn’t have in his locker that bothers me. I’d much rather a dynamic pacey forward like Josh King than a geriatric Andy Carroll type.

With all due respect ACC twitter can fuck off my point was he did his job everybody knew what he was to do and to his credit he also helped to create an excellent chance a two coupled with his experience in big games gives the side more confidence !! That’s not to say he will start against the bindippers but in C L hes got it !!!

Having calmed my self down after that match which was both nerv racking and exciting in near equal measure, I am left with the memory of a very mature and composed performance.
Aurier’ s little misshap aside, he actually played ok and made some really solid moves down the right. Sissoko was immense and they worked together very well. Sissy was talking to him the whole game and it looks like they have a bit of a partnership building there.
In the first 15 mins I felt sorry for Winks. He looked out of his depth and knew he was in for 90 mins due to our non existent bench. But the boy is class and really showed it with that performance. He is going to be an important player for us this season.
Hugo kept us in the game and not for the first time thus week after a couple of great saves against Bournemouth. MOTM for me and showing his world class status.
Sanchez is the other player I would say had a stand out game. This kid is fast, committed and a bloody good defender. In 2-3 years he will be on another planet.
Having Rose back was good, we need that depth back in the squad.

I can’t wait for the reverse fixture but will be looking forward to bringing the bin dippers down a peg or two first. COYS!!

  • Camus October 18, 2017 at 7:41 am

Morning all. So I missed yet another match as I was out at a gig. I’m not doing well so far this season. Sounds like our boys delivered a more than respectable performance though which is massively pleasing. I’m hearing rumours that, rather than praising us for building a competitive team out of nothing, the press are only trying to dismantle the team. I am Jack’s complete lack of surprise.

    • OrganicPaper October 18, 2017 at 7:47 am

Linker, Lampard, Hoddle and Ferdinand started the yard sale about 15 mins after FT.
It was always going to be that way if we got a result but doesn’t make it any more disrespectful.

  • AccringtonSpurs October 18, 2017 at 7:13 am

    Zidane interview:

“Did Pochettino using two strikers surprise you?”

No, not at all. What the opponent does must be taken into account but we know that we can score every time and put the other team in difficulties. They scored the first goal and they went a bit back. But it was not difficult for us because in the end the goal we scored was against a team that does not like quick moves. I’m not surprised they played with two strikers and five defenders. I think they play this way many times.

Both keepers have stopped two or three clear chances and I’m not surprised. He has played the match that he had to play.

I’ve said this many times. It doesn’t matter if it’s Tottenham or other teams. They will always play at 200%. We were at 80%. I’m happy with what we’ve done but there’s always the chance to improve.

    • Ronan October 18, 2017 at 9:09 am

Ridiculous comments from the great man. He fielded 10 of the 11 players that started the CL final against Juve. We were missing Dele, Victor, Dembers, Davies/Rose. Our central defensive unit was disrupted, Aurier was making only his 2nd? start, Llorente starting for first time with Harry Kane, Sissy and a child anchoring midfield. Yet by the end we looked comfortable in their backyard.

  • TheCincinnatiYid October 18, 2017 at 3:36 am

Thought Sissy and the Insurgent made a fine team driving forward on the right. Sissy’s best game in the shirt. Hugo of course was immense. The trailing foot save from 4 feet let them know Spurs were their equals. When they opened up on fire in the second half and couldn’t break us down I could see our way to the point. Surge needs to learn some shite won’t go in the area. Hopefully he is teachable. Lots of talent there. Poch had his arm around the outlaw Danny Rose before he put him in to perform a crucial defensive function as the game wound down. Can’t see all that as the mark of a player out of favor. On another night we could have won or lost 3-1.

RM is a team of great players. Well drilled and play with intelligent intensity. They met their match last night. Spurs have arrived on the world stage.

    • melcyid October 18, 2017 at 2:01 am

he has scored 9 goals against RM in his career so that was a good show of intent to pick him. We didnt go there for the draw.

  • melcyid October 18, 2017 at 12:31 am

Took on the worlds no 1 footy team in their own backyard and nearly nicked it.Matched them every foot of the way everyone of our team was immense for their contribution to the fight and the cause starting with Capt Hugo between the sticks.showed up all the commentators and pundits with our unintimidated performance .I was confident we would get at least a point but that was the first time it was sweaty bum time for ages.Sorry Kane didnt crown the performance with a goal but fair dos to Navas he got a hand to it.
Twas an inspiring touch by our hooligans to create that little ditty for sissy, seems like he thought they meant it.any way it worked. We gave a great account of ourselves on the World stage.Poch has done a tremendous job. Coys

    Fromm previous blog:

Naturally frustrated that set up by Llorente that neither Kane nor Eriksen converted their presentable chances but I concur with Poxy’s assessment that it was a professional mature performance when in a match that we could have won and lost a draw I had taken at the start was a fair result.

    1. Spurs Man of the Match: Lloris
    Verts played well
Back 4 held firm let down by that silly Aurier tackle in the penalty area asking for trouble.

    2. Weakest performance was Eriksen. I defy anybody who thought he had a good game
    because IMO he aint.

    3. Llorente looked slow but set up the chances.

    Lloris 9/10.
Best game in a Spurs shirt.

    Orio 7/10.
Did ok cept for the brain Phart for the pen.

    Audereweild 8/10.
    Solid as always.

    Sanchez 8/10.
Like he’s been there more than 3 months.

    Vertonghen 8/10.
Spurs player of the season thus far.

    Winks 7/10.
Confident. Looks like a star in the making.

    Sissoko 7/10.
Obviously a World Cup coming up.
    Solid.

    Dier 7/10.
    Quietly efficient.

    Eriksen 5/10.
Went missing. In modrics pocket. Poor passing.
    Dawdled in his shot.

    Llorente 7/10.
    Quietly efficient.
Some good lay offs for Spurs efforts on goal.

    Kane 7/10.
Good display just missing a goal.

Subs not worth rating, not enough time to rate.

    Pochettino 10/10.
    Perfect tactics.

    In summary;

Would’ve snapped your hand off if offered a draw before the match.
Despite lloris having to make a couple of worldie saves, feel a bit empty having not won with the chances Spurs had.

    Polished performance.

F365 says: Pochettino shows Mourinho a real masterclass…

‘José Mourinho is minded to sign a new contract at Manchester United but will do so only if he believes the terms reflect his achievements at the club and its current status under him’ – The Guardian.

Apparently, earning a mere £15m a year does not accurately reflect the incredible work Mourinho has done in moulding Manchester United into League Cup and Europa League winners and leading them to an incredible sixth-place finish in between spending £300m on new players. Rather a lot more money is clearly required to reward a ‘current status’ on resplendent display with their unambitious performance against a vulnerable Liverpool at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino has transformed Tottenham into genuine title contenders and Champions League stalwarts, earning considerably more Premier League points than Mourinho since he became Manchester United manager, whilst having a net transfer spend only just north of bugger all. On Tuesday night he took a team lacking Dele Alli, Victor Wanyama and two international left-backs to the Bernabeu as equals to Real Madrid and emulated Bobby Robson, Rafa Benitez, Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson in returning unbeaten. He earns little more than £5m a year.

Pray tell us which manager deserves a pay rise commensurate with his achievements with his club.

In the centre of Tottenham’s midfield was a 21-year-old Englishman who had never even started a game against an elite Premier League side, and yet he took on Real Madrid with composure, confidence and just the right amount of aggression. Any other big-six side would have sent Winks out on loan this season but Pochettino is no ordinary manager – he keeps his most promising young players close; the last thing he needs is Winks unlearning all things Tottenham while getting a crick in his neck at West Brom or Burnley.

Tottenham could take on the might of Real Madrid and draw 1-1 with nobody’s dream central midfield of Winks, Moussa Sissoko and Christian Eriksen because every member of that squad has been diligently and intelligently coached by Pochettino rather than simply bought off the shelf. The shape was compact, the space was minimal, the discipline was almost absolute. It is telling that the one player who is guilty of making rash decisions is one of the last men through the door; Serge Aurier is still a work in progress.

The Argentine has earned the right to name a team that makes you raise an eyebrow. You trust he has a plan. A front two of Fernando Llorente and Kane in the Bernabeu? Not for Pochettino the problem of leaving a lone striker isolated; if you lack pace in midfield, then at least ensure that direct balls can stick. And the Spaniard perhaps should have had a penalty, while it was interplay between the two strikers that created a chance untypically spurned by Kane. It worked. It all worked.

Dominating talk in the build-up to this game was Kane’s status as a potential superstar on the same level as Cristiano Ronaldo, an already sizzling pot stirred by Pep Guardiola with his flippant reference to “the Harry Kane team”. An apology is due, not to Kane’s teammates but the one man who really defines this Tottenham side, a man who deserves the twin job descriptions of both coach and manager, moulding players in the long term and then managing them to performances and results with genuine tactical versatility.

This is ‘the Mauricio Pochettino team’ and they are really very good indeed.

    • AccringtonSpurs October 17, 2017 at 10:31 pm

I think he was less effective because he played a different role tonight. We often had 5 at the back with Sissoko and Aurier covering the right hand side. Eriksen was drifting around the midfield trying to block passing lanes.

No need for nerves. No more Spursy. Great tactics, cool calm and composed at the back. Pochos done wonders in defense. My only gripes are Tintins poor showing and the easy, numerous and unnecessary give away of posession.

    • Urbane Sturgeon October 17, 2017 at 10:07 pm

Fink you’re being a tad harsh. We were playing the Madrid Globetrotters who, as you might have noticed, are very good at pressurising & quick ball retrieval. Good positioning and anticipation can make a decent pass look like a poor one. Also both sides were giving the ball away but sometimes it’s your own team’s profligacy which catches strongest in the memory.

    • East Stand October 17, 2017 at 10:08 pm

Perhaps we really are growing a pair?

      • Urbane Sturgeon October 17, 2017 at 10:17 pm

Poch’s ability to fine tune individuals and overall performances whilst playing about with completely untried (in realtime) formations is a wonder to behold. Bet a few ‘big’ clubs’ owners are beholding too.

I’m quite enjoying how Aurier can take a player on. It’s a very useful tool to have.

    • paul October 17, 2017 at 9:57 pm

i’m a Serge fan, i think he’s going to be HUGE for us, he’ll learn

      • East Stand October 17, 2017 at 9:59 pm

I agree. Poch should sort him out in time.

I’ve seen him interviewed a few times and yes he’s got a bit of bling an ting but generally he comes across as an intelligent, sensitive bloke who wants to do well for the team. I think his fuck ups will hurt him and he’ll want to do better. Oh and btw who created our goal tonight?

      • paul October 17, 2017 at 10:02 pm

        lolz!
He’s a premiership football player and he’s French, of course he’s a tool

for us yes, for the spaniards a must mate, they’ve got him marked as a future el classico.

  • AccringtonSpurs October 17, 2017 at 9:54 pm

I wonder if Dembele and Wanyama would have been too physical for this game. Winks more mobile and with more self-control. Couple of occasions at the start where he misplaced the odd pass and had poor positioning, but he grew into the game well.

    • East Stand October 17, 2017 at 9:56 pm

Victor might have not been right for the full 90 but Dembele would have been an asset I’m sure.

      • paul October 17, 2017 at 9:56 pm

        fack yes

  • Urbane Sturgeon October 17, 2017 at 9:53 pm

Not only was that a truly magnificent, confident, clever, mature performance from every player, and I include Aurier for the way he settled and continued to improve after the silly tackle in the box, but given the quality of chances created by both sides, I feel slightly miffed at our not coming away 2-1 given Kane’s near miss and Erikson’s side-netted shot which made what I thought was a good opportunity (for him or Kane had he chipped a cross) look more of a half chance. Winks looked more the part than I’ve ever seen him, and Rose was pleasingly vibrant and sharp looking given his extended holiday (I look forward to his return, I think he’s even better than Davies). Dier was as good as anyone; quietly solid without ever attracting attention, as he so often is. No one under performed & everyone stepped up. A very encouraging night.

    My MotM: Mauricio.

Verts MOTM. Shame Aurier gave away the pen as he’d have run him close otherwise. Lloris has a great game too, as did Winks, Sanchez and…Sissy. Yup, Sissy.

Betting question. If the bet was Eriksen and a 1 1 draw and the opener was an OF does it pay out as a single result bet?

    • BARD October 17, 2017 at 9:45 pm

      OG

      • MysteriousStranger October 17, 2017 at 11:12 pm

No they would pay out on Ronaldo as 1st GS, as Own Goals don’t count for betting purposes with most firms – it isn’t usually quoted – so the winning scorecast would be settled as Ronaldo 1-1.

  • paul October 17, 2017 at 9:42 pm

Looking at the table ok we need one point mathematically but in reality there’s no facking way we’re not going through
