Mauricio Pochettino left very little to the imagination in  his post match comments yesterday afternoon.

As those of you who have spent any significant time abroad will know, when foreigners become less guarded, their English improves enormously.

In a nutshell anyone who thought Poch genuinely believed all that piffle he was spouting parrot fashion from Levy, about the club following its own unique path of not investing in player retention and not investing in strengthening the squad etc, has just experienced a bit of a shock to their system.

You can readily spot these people because they are either stone cold silent or they are beginning each sentence with a jabbering ‘Bbbbbbbbbut’.

For my part I think it’s quite amusing that it didn’t take so long for what was sneered at as my ‘eccentric ranting’ to be revealed as quite mainstream. And those who were propagating the myths about the Academy, Penury and so forth are now feeling rather isolated and frankly stupid.

It was wholly irrational to invent all the excuses you did and now you are sat there reading this incandescent – not rage but with embarrassment.

Levy ‘s message was greeted by ordinary people (or as I prefer ordinary experts – after all they have been watching football for decades) railing angrily against its emptiness and spin. Railing against the smugness employed to pass off business optimisation as the football going well.

Whenever you question where the cups are (that’s THE metric by the way) the dialogue degenerates into a series of fudging, mental cup de sacs, ‘You don’t remember the 90’s do you?’ and the equally ubiquitous ‘Careful what you wish for’. Anti-thought, unimaginative dullness.

Comparatively speaking Pochettino came out blazing yesterday.

It reminded me of the final scene in Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid movie where hopeless outnumbered by heavily armed Bolivian soldiers the two through open then doors firing into the harshness of the sunlight, the dust and the rain of Bolivian bullets.

The gaffer spoke from the heart to PA Sport. ‘Maybe I am talking too much, maybe I should breathe.’ this is the sort of thing a father would say to his child.

There was a reiteration of him being replaced. This time though, minus the spite of his previous ‘or another manager’ line.

‘…the most important thing is that tomorrow all can change because it’s not in my hands. It’s not my decision to be here or not. I depend on my bosses and my boss.’ was more considered and almost certainly reflected that he’d delivered Champions League football, he was ahead f schedule and was now in a credible position to argue his case with anyone.

‘We need to talk a lot between us and the club. That’s a bit up to Daniel and the club. After four years we need to assess that period and try to win big trophies. We need to review things.’

This too was gentle, but designed to make ENICs blood run cold.

Trophies as an actually task – not a coincidental possibility along the way.

A review. Or as we grown ups call such things, a paradigm shift.

There was also this line which again was gentle but essentially urinated over the defence mechanisms of every Flat Earther on the round round planet.

‘…Deliver the best work in trying to win what other clubs are winning.’

In essence, ‘I’m glad you enjoyed colouring the arch and cheering the contract extensions, applauding the net spend and pretending all that other utterly meaningless guano meant something but what real football clubs are doing is wining silverware, so snap out of it.’

‘I don’t know if the club will agree with me or not, but we are going to talk next week to create the new project or what I think that we need to do together again to try to improve.’

Good grief.

A new project?!

Opposed to the the current one, that anyone with a brain could see was time expired.

Pochettino has thrown the proverbial spanner in the works here.

This wasn’t on message.

This wasn’t towing the party line.

This was not in the script.

What this was in truth, just enough to make me want to forgive Poch for all his foibles.

As Uncle Monty said in Withal & I, ‘I am preparing myself to forgive you.’

‘It is understood that Pochettino plans to use Son Heung-min as a centre forward and the main back-up to Harry Kane next season…’

Understood by whom? This sounds more like a Levy masterstroke than anything else.
“Want back up to Kane? Can’t you just use Son? I can get a cheap (sorry, highly sought after) midfielder from the bargain bin.”

          • AntSpurs May 14, 2018 at 10:36 pm

Assists make same bonus as goals scored 😘

    • daytripper May 14, 2018 at 11:23 pm

Toby was phenomenal when I saw him six weeks ago in the Belgium friendly. He has been fit for a while now – his not playing is entirely due to Poch’s frustration with the contract situation. It is clear that Poch chose to work on developing Sanchez for the future and placed that above winning anything this season. I personally think Sanchez is going to be as big a dud than Sissoko. I hope I am wrong, but I have only once seen a defender come into the league that ball watches and has really poor footwork develop into a decent defender – and that was Michael Dawson, who never overcame those deficiencies. His limited success (5 England caps I think?) was entirely due to the size of his heart and love for the game.

Poch said in one of his press conferences about 6 weeks ago that Toby was healthy (which we saw in Belgium’s friendlies), but that he didnt want to break up the Sanchez-Vertonghen partnership. That was when I knew Poch was a lost cause.

        • Mikespurs May 14, 2018 at 8:42 pm

Shitsko yes, but so would I. Lamela…….jury still out for me but he’s great at high energy press against big teams. I’d keep him. Pass on the stoke fatty

          • aristotle May 14, 2018 at 8:43 pm

Jury still out on Lamela after 5 years?

            • daytripper May 14, 2018 at 8:47 pm

Not here. He scores great goals when he is 10 feet from the goal and the ball is delivered perfectly to his left foot. 9 out of every 10 passes forward in the final third are delivered precisely to the other team. But, he does his best Robbie Savage impression when defending/pressing, I guess there is always room for a player that works tirelessly defending like that.

              • aristotle May 14, 2018 at 8:51 pm

That is the bit that annoys me the most. If Aurier or Wanyama clatters someone it’s called out for what it is. Clumsy, reckless etc. Lamela concedes so much possession and when he chases after the bloke who mugged him and whacks him from behind it gets called ‘tigerish’ or ‘work rate’.

I prefer plain old shit as a description for this type of nonsense.

                • Accy May 14, 2018 at 8:57 pm

                  +1

especially as that’s not what an AM is supposed to be doing. He’s supposed to score and create goals.

                  • Mikespurs May 14, 2018 at 9:06 pm

Wrong. When we press high, someone who forces bad passes by getting in defenders faces is invaluable. Against bus parkers, not so much but he is good on the touch line. Also I’m ok with someone trying something in the final third to make some space. Very different then trying it in our final 3rd…….cough…..cough…..dier. he’s been horrible the last few games & has no business being a cb

The way he took his two goals yesterday was looking back to his best. Since his injury he hadn’t be playing too well. Happened last season aswell. When he’s at his best, he’s unplayable.

FFS. Now everyone is a Pocho lover.
Bbbbuuuuutttt he cant get game management right?!?!?!?. His players cant play at a decent level for a full game. He broke up the multiverse’s best defence, ever.Consistently chooses Oreo, Dicksokko, snubs Toby, only makes subs after 70 mins, llorente gets 2 mins per game, blah, blah, blah. Back to managment school i say. Levymis going to ……we will see.

    • richspurs May 14, 2018 at 6:58 pm

      Ahem. Levy is

    • Mikespurs May 14, 2018 at 8:19 pm

I call bull on that. I get flack for my criticism of poch. Think his rotation is bad at best. His subs are mind boggling at best. But he makes ok players play theyre best in his system. Has had a shoestring budget to work off of & we end up top 4 3rd time in a row. He’s young & still learning but is our best manager for sometime. The shot over the bow makes me like him even more. Sending him back to manage school is just a plain stupid comment. Lets back him (with actual good signings) & see what he can really do.

So Poch’s leverage is down to one club,Madrid.PSG have announced Tomas Touchel as their next boss on a two year deal.

    • caveman May 14, 2018 at 7:01 pm

If Poch says to Levy, two fingers mate, Levy will know he’s strengthening a rival with one of the best managers around. If he goes for Rafa, he’ll be met with a shopping list much more expensive than Poch’s. That’ll go with any other ‘half decent’ manager he approaches. He’s not about to let Poch walk.

      • aristotle May 14, 2018 at 7:09 pm

Levy will recruit Sean Dyche and give him 25 million, a loaf of hovis and an ounce of Old Holburn to recruit lots of gritty battlers from the North West area.

        • caveman May 14, 2018 at 7:13 pm

Don’t be flippant Aris, Levy needs for Spurs to be top 4 now more than ever and as H has said he needs Poch more that oxygen right now.

  • daytripper May 14, 2018 at 6:49 pm

I am fed up with Poch. I think we are going to look back at this season and the roster we had years/decades from now and wonder how we didnt crush Juve and make a serious run at the CL. If you look at this from Levy’s perspective, he gave Poch a starting XI that includes players that are the best players in their countries at their position (and near the top in the world). It was not Levy who chose to play a child on defence against Juve, when one of the best defenders in the world was healthy and itching to win the CL. That child did what you would expect for a 21 year old and make a bunch of mistakes that led to our exit from the CL.

We have watched Poch long enough now to know that he always prefers to play the promising, unproven kid over the seasoned professional. That is built into his DNA, there is something inside him that makes him feel more satisfied with himself when he has molded a kid into a star. I am starting to think he prefers that over winning cups or the league. That achievement is much easier, with significantly less pressure, than failing to win anything notable.

      Treating feelings as facts there.

Word is Toby is a bit crocked as it happens. Might be spin, but that would explain why Poch hasn’t picked him.

      • daytripper May 14, 2018 at 8:03 pm

Poch said in one of his press conferences about 6 weeks ago that Toby was healthy (which we saw in Belgium’s friendlies), but that he didnt want to break up the Sanchez-Vertonghen partnership. That was when I knew Poch was a lost cause.

        • Mikespurs May 14, 2018 at 8:25 pm

    Spurs sweep Sugar under carpet

Tottenham announced a restructuring of their off-the-pitch management yesterday in an attempt to remove the last traces of the former chairman Alan Sugar’s reign and increase the influence of the club’s new owners Enic. The changes mean that Daniel Levy, the managing director of Enic who bought Spurs from Sugar in February, will now take over the day-to-day running of the club. Levy has been the executive chairman of Spurs since the £22m Enic takeover while the club has been run by David Buchler. The two men are now set to change jobs, with Buchler likely to take charge of communications. It was also announced that two former Sugar executives are leaving White Hart Lane. John Sedgwick, the operations manager and a close ally of Sugar, has left the club along with John Ireland, the company secretary. The changes, results of an eight-month review by Buchler, came as Spurs announced pre-tax losses of £3.5m for the year ending June 30. A club source said: “There is no doubt that those who have been removed are seen as the old guard from the days of Sugar. This is not about cost cutting; it is about how to run Tottenham more efficiently.” Levy said yesterday: “David Buchler has recommended that the major shareholder [Enic] be involved in the operation of the club. They have most to lose, so I will now assume an executive role. The reality is that since Enic bought its shares I have played an active role in taking the club forward.”

Buchler, in his review, concluded that White Hart Lane’s capacity should be increased from 36,000 to 44,000. Spurs already have preliminary planning permission to complete the work.

It was also recommended that the money that would usually be spent on experienced players should be used to develop young players at the club’s academy instead. Plans are afoot to strengthen the club’s brand by spreading the Tottenham name worldwide. Levy revealed yesterday that one of the reasons for the increased pre-tax loss was because the club had spent £1.5m on sacking the former manager George Graham and recruiting his replacement Glenn Hoddle. Spurs’ turnover increased from £48m last year to £48.4m in 2001. Around £20m was spent on players. Levy said: “You only have to look at how we are performing on the pitch to realise what an impact that change of management has had. Our league position might not reflect it yet but the fans can sense there’s been a real change.”

We have the smartest manager in the league by a mile. He’s delivered 3 CL qualifications and is THE biggest asset the club has. He’s waited ‘till he had credit and now he’s spending it. If Dan is sensible he’ll entrust 150m or whatever it is to Poch. No better person to spend it.

Kane remains goal hungry. I never thought we’d have a player get near Clive’s season total, but if Kane keeps improving he could do it.:

“Asked about his 41 tally, Harry, speaking pitch side at Wembley, told us: “I’m proud of that, definitely. It was nice to get a couple of goals and get to that 30 mark (in the Premier League).

“It’s been a very good season but there is always room for improvement and that’s what I’ll be looking at next season.”

Topple 41? “Yes, let’s do it next season.”

Listened to radio yesterday and reporter said a section of crowd booed Spurs off at halftime, surprising to me after a very good season. There’s a warning there for Levy and Co, if Poch walks and Spurs drop out of the top four things could turn very nasty, very quickly.

    • Ronan May 14, 2018 at 5:39 pm

Same at the Newcastle game. Ridiculous, considering the lack of support they’d given to a team running on empty and insulting to Poch. But agree, it’s ominous for Levy.

    • Harry Hotspur May 14, 2018 at 6:15 pm

The template NOT to follow is that of Arsenal, Jim. That’s precisely what they experienced…

    • mystic arnold May 14, 2018 at 6:57 pm

I think the booing at half time was for the ref who was very biased towards the fairy tale team

  • Spursy May 14, 2018 at 5:29 pm

Poch has done a good thing, speaking up like this and in this clear, yet respectful tone. If anyone can get Levy to open his wallet, it’s Poch.

Last night I didn’t think he’d walk, but this morning I do. He knows if he had the resources he could really do wonders. His expression at allowing Leicester to put in 4 was something to behold.

No one with talent wants to spend their time flogging a dead horse.

Now is a test of Levy’s nerve. Poch has timed this beautifully with the new stadium and all. I hope he has his clear list of ins, outs and money he wants spent.

He’s the best manager we’ve had in years and years. Don’t mess this up, Daniel.

    • caveman May 14, 2018 at 5:34 pm

Levy knows that this spin he’s been living off for the past 17 years can only last so long and it’s time to give Poch the support he needs or the whole house of cards could start wobbling. Levy knows this, he’s a smart cookie and will meet Poch half way if he’s in fact sane.

      • Spursy May 14, 2018 at 5:36 pm

Here’s hoping for sanity, Cavey. Poch has befriended him and jumped through all the hoops. Now he wants payback. Do it, Daniel!

        • caveman May 14, 2018 at 5:37 pm

          100%. Hope your well Spursy.

          • Spursy May 14, 2018 at 5:42 pm

Thanks, I’m doing really well. We got to Wembley through a work colleague of my husband for the Newky game. Pretty dull, but notable how the players went mental with each other at the whistle! They’re close knit and that’s Poch’s doing.
            Hope you’re well, Cavey.

        • Horndog 🇺🇸 May 14, 2018 at 5:40 pm

I have a gut feeling, Spursy, that DL is going to come to the party. I don’t get that feeling often so here is hoping.

          • Spursy May 14, 2018 at 5:46 pm

Hoping so, Horny. It’s ironic, but it’s at the point where it wouldn’t make business sense for him to refuse. If the team is in uproar and they all want to leave if Poch goes, then the new stadium is a complete shambles. I reckon if DL was going to trust anyone with a huge bag of cash, it’s Poch. Hope you’re well.

            • Horndog 🇺🇸 May 14, 2018 at 5:54 pm

All is great, thank you. Same back at you.

            • aristotle May 14, 2018 at 5:54 pm

You are deluded. Levy has thick skin and has seen off more difficult situations than this. The cream of this current squad could raise Levy £500 million in todays crazy world. Eriksen and Kane alone would bring him £330 million if the right clubs want them. Add some compo for Poch and Levy has cleared ENIC of at least half their debt to the banks. This is a more likely scenario than Levy getting sentimental about winning Trophies. Levy will bide his time if serious money is offered for the top players. Why do you think the boy is getting so steamed up of late?

              • caveman May 14, 2018 at 6:10 pm

Rubbish, if he did that the fans would talk with their feet and the stadium would be like the emptycrates, half full. Levy isn’t a gambler he’s a strategist. His strategy has worked up until now and he has promised that any players the club wants to stay wont be sold. He doesn’t need the agro in the new destination.

Levy will fill the ground for the first two seasons but I would be very surprised if Poch, Kane, Alli, Eriksen, Toby, Vertonghen, Lloris, Son and possibly Sanchez are still here by then. I expect two big sales every window until they are all gone. Poch will go if the players are sold. He has been preparing the ground for this with his ‘another manager’ remarks and the pending ‘crunch talks’.

What can possibly stop this scenario from unfolding and if you believe it isn’t true explain to me which players I have listed will be here in two years time?

                  • AntSpurs May 14, 2018 at 6:22 pm

Kane, Alli, Eriksen, Verts, Son, Lloris and Lamela.

                  • gloster1861 May 14, 2018 at 6:37 pm

Crunch time. If Poch goes this summer, Levy’ll prove he is an untrustworthy steward of the team. They’ll get sold and Levy will try to buy young replacements but pay off a lot of debt too.

              • Spursy May 14, 2018 at 6:43 pm

Aristotle, I’m under no illusions about Levy’s thick skin and hatchet nature where managers are concerned. It doesn’t make business sense to sell off a top team going into a new stadium. It would be like having a new shop selling rubbish. This is an interesting moment for our club.

                • aristotle May 14, 2018 at 6:53 pm

Levy won’t sell them all in one go. My guess would be Poch going in the summer followed by two big sales in August. Probably Toby and Rose. A new manager installed will need ‘time’ to get his message across so the interest level can be retained for at least 1 year until the next batch of sales which could be any 2 from Eriksen, Alli and Kane. When the manager taking over from Poch is dismissed in October 2019 there will be further departures in the January window as disillusionment with the caretaker manager sets in. Fraser Campbell will be re-signed on loan to help Spurs in the fight to avoid the drop. This will be followed by the sale of the remaining quality players in the summer of 2020.

Spurs fan saying Poch ain’t a winner and when Jose came into Chelsea he instilled a winning mentality and its not down to Levy. Yeah, and they had a billionaire owner and spent a load on quality. Poch ain’t a winner yet but with some backing perhaps he could BE one and not have to feel one anymore. We don’t have to go bankrupt, just bring in players to enhance the side instead of Ligue 1 catalogue junk.

Until Spurs pay the top players the going rate they will continually struggle to win the league or compete regularly in the latter stages of the CL. The domestic cups are winnable for clubs on the edge of the top 4 and under ENIC this is the only viable trophy option unless they change their wage structure.

ENIC will be happy to accept compensation for Poch, Kane, Alli, Eriksen, Alderweireld, Vertonghen and any other improving players, in the next 3-4 windows. We all know this is the ENIC way. They haven’t fooled us.

      • David Dillenberg May 14, 2018 at 4:46 pm

Yes the FA Cup was certainly winnable this season until we fluffed our lines!!

        • aristotle May 14, 2018 at 4:51 pm

But would have been meaningless without a top four finish. Small beer. Spurs played Wimbledon, Newport, Rochdale and Swansea to arrive at the semi final, against a top 4 rival, and lost by the odd goal, after they had hit the post.

          • ronwol96061 May 14, 2018 at 5:12 pm

            Aristotle.
Poch is the litmus rest for change or not
            We will know soon.
Now Pichs played his first hand we can watch not theorize

            • aristotle May 14, 2018 at 5:41 pm

If Poch is given money to spend, on buying players of HIS choice, and does not have top players sold off, against his wishes, due to a wage structure out of his control, why would any Spurs supporter believe Poch would not succeed Ron? I accept that when Poch’s current contract was signed he accepted the terms and the length of the contract but; just as is the case with the top players, if another club offers Poch better terms and conditions, why would he not be tempted or indeed request to be released from his current contract?

Clubs like Arsenal or Chelsea may be very tempted to go after Poch. Not only because of what he has achieved at Spurs but because players may follow him.

    • Ahole May 14, 2018 at 4:48 pm

We did soend over 100 million one window and that was a disaster, its not all about money. Pogba and Sanchez great examples at United. We have improved and if we keep our best players again this season, sell 4-5 who offer nothing and buy 2 or 3 very god players who can really help improve first 13-14 that would be great. It’s not going to be wholesale and doesnt need to be stupid money.

      • ronwol96061 May 14, 2018 at 5:14 pm

        We spent rhe Bale money

        Its different

        • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? May 14, 2018 at 5:18 pm

Yes, we should have maybe got 2 really top players instead of buying half a team of buyrites.

          • ronwol96061 May 14, 2018 at 5:20 pm

            At least Levy attempted it
            He did spend the money

            • aristotle May 14, 2018 at 6:04 pm

He invested the money Ron. He didn’t spend it. Eriksen was one of the magnificent 7. If he is sold for £80 million in the near future there it all is back in Levy’s (deep) pockets. Forget the wasted millions on Pauliniho, Chiriches, Soldado and Lamela. It was an each way spread bet. From the sale of Carrick Levy has been gambling. The Carrick money bought Berbatov, the Berbatov money bought Modric and Bale, the Bale money bought the mag 7. The risk is decreasing with each bet Levy places.

You have to give Levy credit for making his methods work but unless they pay the top players the going rate then Spurs will have to wait a few years yet for the success they now crave.

The Project has always been about slowly trading up. Trouble is, everyone else strengthens at the top end and we’ll struggle to keep top four.

                • Harry Hotspur May 14, 2018 at 6:22 pm

The project has been a smoke and mirrors game for skimming money off of mug punters.

                  The bastards.

                • aristotle May 14, 2018 at 6:25 pm

But if Spurs don’t get top four will that alter the way Levy rolls? He will sack the managers and sell the players. The ‘unhappy’ players will be sold because they ‘want champions league football’. It’s so obvious that this is the most likely outcome. The sad thing is I believe that Levy has enough client reference numbers from the season at Wembley to keep the interest in the bandwagon rolling through the next transitional phase.

At least 41 Palestinians have been killed and 1,800 wounded by Israeli troops, Palestinian officials say, in the deadliest day of clashes since the 2014 Gaza war.
The violence came as the US opened its embassy in Jerusalem, a controversial move that has infuriated Palestinians.

The status of Jerusalem goes to the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Israel and the Palestinians: Can settlement issue be solved?
What are alternatives to a two-state solution?
Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem is not recognised internationally and, according to the 1993 Israel-Palestinian peace accords, the final status of Jerusalem is meant to be discussed in the latter stages of peace talks.

I dont like it either when fans criticise these kind of decisions from the armchair but sometimes bringing on players late and not changing it up a bit has left me frustrated. The proof is in the pudding though and we ended up third. Great. He is a very proud and belligerent man though and with this hard headedness we get greatness but also that fall away where there is a man who does not seem to learn by his mistakes maybe. Either way he is the best manager since Burkinshaw and if we lose him we are in big humiliating troub as far as im concnerned.

“sometimes bringing on players late and not changing it up a bit has left me frustrated”

Chelsea bring on Willian or Fabregas on the occasions when plan ‘a’ has not worked. City have a similar array of talent that allows them to change the shape, the tactics and the players in difficult scenarios. If Poch had a bench full of players genuinely pushing for a place in the starting 11 Spurs would already be champions.

    • a waddle and a fork May 14, 2018 at 4:07 pm

      yes i agree

  • aristotle May 14, 2018 at 3:39 pm

I get a little narked at the subs issue with poch,he’s got very little to work with in regards to a squad & knows the players bought for him don’t cut it at the level he wants to play at.He therefore waits to see if his overworked 1st team can get themselves through.Thats not poor use of subs it’s just what it is imo

Agree with the sentiment in this post 100%. Poch has improved every single player that the club has retained during his tenure. He has been bought a few turds, that he clearly didn’t request, but has defended these players until his reluctance to actually use them has given the game away. Aurier and Moura from PSG coincided with the absence of Toby and the subsequent rumours. If the Bald Kaiser does indeed cash in on Toby then Poch would be within his rites to walk or manufacture a ‘mutual consent’ termination of his contract.

Toby leaving will indicate that, from a supporter’s perspective, the next 5 seasons will be all about hoping Spurs can continue what they have been achieving, but without Poch. This policy will inevitably lead to the continuing demoralisation of the top players, who will want the rewards that Walker, and possibly Toby will be receiving. If that is not possible at Spurs then they will all follow Poch out of the door over the next 3-4 windows.

This will suit Levy’s strategy for running Spurs but it will become increasingly difficult for Levy to avoid the blame and could get really ugly quite quickly. I don’t believe ENIC will ever pay the top players the going rate. I think an attempt may be made to persuade Poch to stay by offering him big money but Poch could have the money and the trophies if he goes elsewhere.

Who will be the next Spurs manager? Chris Hughton anyone?

Pochettino knows this is a pivotal point.

The ENIC selling point for the New Stadium was to make Spurs competitive with the rest. Well here it comes, now live up to those words. Poch has delivered Champions League for the inaugural season (am I the first on here with that word! 😁) further enhanced as the only London club to involved at the top table.

Now it’s up to ENIC to deliver on their part.

This is a burkinshaw/venables moment,to lose Pochettino now would be as big as that.I don’t count Redknapp because he burnt his bridges long before he got the boot.I consider he is gone & is playing the game,he knows Levy won’t pay the wages he needs to keep or attract players so he sets himself up elsewhere,(Madrid I think) throws in a word bomb & waits to be paid off. Those were the most eloquent words he’d ever strung together in English so they were not off the cuff.

Agreed. Those words were scripted carefully. They weren’t off the cuff remarks. This is what Pochettino has been thinking for a while now.

We’ve reached third place because of Pochettino. ENIC surely can’t have assumed reaching top four in this hard season at Wembley, so there is 50 million quid coming in the next season which must be available to be spent in addition to player sales.

    Over to you Daniel.

‘Time for the club to take a few risks’ – exactly! we need to snap out of this mindset that every big signing is potentially a first step to doing a Leeds. The ball is firmly in Levy’s court now. Poch has earned the right to be backed. These talks between the two could be a watershed moment in the Poch era…

  • a waddle and a fork May 14, 2018 at 1:17 pm

Let’s be honest here, at 3-1 down yesterday Potch was thinking I have chucked it again and brand Potch is suffering. These comments must have spewed out of that relief and rollercoaster of emotions. All the chat about not being a winner in the press etc is not good for someone who wishes to manage Real Madrid one day. As for his comments now, It is a challenge that has come at the perfect time. He has over performed as a manager regardless of his bad use of subs and falling down at the last hurdle. He has created a team with spirit who we are proud of. At the end of the day he is not given 70 mil to go fix a dodgy defence with a top defender a la Klopp – instead he is forced to sell Toby (who for someone who has not played was magnificent yesterday)

I personally cannot reiterate enough how devestating it would be to sell Toby not just to the perception of the club but to the dressing room itself. All eyes on the bald wanker now because they have to spin this out dont they. Lose Potch and fill your stadium with popcorn eating cock munchers. Is it too late to fill that stadium with the soul of the club we love so dearly? If he says look Chelsea want me what you gonna do? That is what i would do if i was Potch. Go big – he is holding the cards now.

    • Nick May 14, 2018 at 1:21 pm

I get a little narked at the subs issue with poch,he’s got very little to work with in regards to a squad & knows the players bought for him don’t cut it at the level he wants to play at.He therefore waits to see if his overworked 1st team can get themselves through.Thats not poor use of subs it’s just what it is imo

      • Accy May 14, 2018 at 1:23 pm

Yeh I kind of agree with this

        • Accy May 14, 2018 at 1:24 pm

          And this:

          • Harry Hotspur May 14, 2018 at 1:30 pm

            This is apologist nonsense.

We sold Bonzo for money, We didn’t accidentally lose him.

We kept pushing Dembele despite the fact he was obviously faked. He later ADMITTED he told them he was kaput at the start of the season.

Aurier has been a disaster – he wasn’t a gift. Spurs scouted (STOP LAUGHING) him and paid money for him.

            All clubs get injuries.
Yet our ‘world class’ Hotspur Way appears to have Dr Crippen heading up the physic room.

It was a remarkable season because Poch is a magician.

The time for dicking about inventing excuses is over.

Dembele should have been replaced with a quality deputy last summer. I said at the time, if Mouse admitted that it really should have happened. We could have ushered in the new player over the season and he’d be raring and ready now.

Yes, when you read this, and it is a pretty apt summing up of events this season, you really do wonder how the hell we managed to finish third! On the face of it, it’s something of a bloody miracle!

            • Harry Hotspur May 14, 2018 at 1:35 pm

              Miraculous is an understatement!

        I rather agree.

      • a waddle and a fork May 14, 2018 at 1:27 pm

I dont like it either when fans criticise these kind of decisions from the armchair but sometimes bringing on players late and not changing it up a bit has left me frustrated. The proof is in the pudding though and we ended up third. Great. He is a very proud and belligerent man though and with this hard headedness we get greatness but also that fall away where there is a man who does not seem to learn by his mistakes maybe. Either way he is the best manager since Burkinshaw and if we lose him we are in big humiliating troub as far as im concnerned.

This was the missing piece from the puzzle.

Ron said that Poch had leverage, but he didn’t – BECAUSE – he was recycling the party line about knitting players etc.

Now he’s said out loud, the knitting thing was great.

But now we need to shop retail.

Levy likes negotiating. Let’s see him wriggle out of this one.

  • Nick May 14, 2018 at 1:14 pm

This is a burkinshaw/venables moment,to lose Pochettino now would be as big as that.I don’t count Redknapp because he burnt his bridges long before he got the boot.I consider he is gone & is playing the game,he knows Levy won’t pay the wages he needs to keep or attract players so he sets himself up elsewhere,(Madrid I think) throws in a word bomb & waits to be paid off. Those were the most eloquent words he’d ever strung together in English so they were not off the cuff.

None of us know their relationship.

Poch has earnt the right to say what he said.

Levy will know this and will know he needs poch so maybe they will get some common ground

      • Harry Hotspur May 14, 2018 at 1:03 pm

It’s far kinder and more nuanced than a resignation letter.

He’s not made any demands, or been disrespectful.

What he has done is said the unthinkable out loud.

A spanner in the works that can be removed, opposed to a nail bomb under Levy’s car.

        • sartre May 14, 2018 at 1:15 pm

The bit that worries me is ‘being brave is the most important, and to take risks’, risks mean cash, I can’t Levy going with that.

Although he might, if he’s realised how much Poch is actually worth

          • Harry Hotspur May 14, 2018 at 1:19 pm

Not just cash, but cash up front.

Levy can’t say ‘but I spent 30mill on Sissy’ because we only bought the lump because the HP terms were so irresistible!

Poch needs to give Baldy a list replacements for the ones off, PLUS a list of must haves.

Baldy must not spend ‘some’ of the money he gets in and say ‘good luck’.

            That does’t work.

With a WIZARD coach you get top 4 by the skin of your teeth, but not a hope of any cups.

Over to you, you bald mentalist.

    • poxy May 14, 2018 at 1:07 pm

It doesn’t have to be, necessarily, but I think a parting of the ways is the likely outcome; we’ve unnecessarily built a ginormously expensive shopping mall, leaving us with so much debt that we can’t afford the requisite team improvements (it’s not so much the cost of signings but the wages bill which would probably have to be increased by about 50K a year per player at the very least).

This new stadium promises to weigh us down for years – it should be called The Anvil!

  • poxy May 14, 2018 at 12:55 pm

Though most of us (myself included) would rather have won a title and finished nowhere the other two seasons, it has nevertheless been a comment on our admirable consistency that we have been the ONLY club to finish in the first three in each of the last 3 seasons ; a really notable achievement when you consider the amounts of money spent on signings and wages by all our principal rivals.

Finishes in first 3 in last 3 seasons:

    Spurs 3
    Man City 2
    Man utd 1
    Chelsea 1
    Arsenal 1
    Leicester City 1
    Liverpool 0

Also, no-one has finished above us twice and we have, jointly with Man City, the highest average placing during these three seasons! Remember, too, that when Chelsea and Leicester were beating us to the league title they had the ideal preparation of one game per week freed from European commitments.

Poch is not perfect but all the above is pretty impressive and Guardiola and Mourinho in my opinion would have been hard put to better this. In an ideal world, The Spurs board, seeing the mostly good work he has done, would step up their backing of poch.

  • caveman May 14, 2018 at 12:48 pm

I believe that if Poch hadn’t achieved UCL qualification he would have walked (although he would have liked to stay) of his own design as he wasn’t backed by tightarse and he had worked the best he could with the tools he had. If he doesn’t get what he’s asking this close season he’ll pack his bags.

  • Harry Hotspur May 14, 2018 at 12:43 pm

    Still Nil Nil

I wrote notcso long ago ‘be careful what you wish for’.

In isolation it probably fits into the Flat Earther remit and makes me a Levy lick arse.

But when it’s attached to the rest of the post I put that comment at the end of, it fitted in.

As I’ve said numerous times, I’m neither pro nor anti Levy.

On here, the levy spectrum goes from one extreme to the other right across the horizon as far as the eye can see; that’s what opinions do.

    And each one is valid.

What makes one persons opinion more right than another’s?
Is free speech not allowed anymore?
Do those who express an opinion that doesn’t fit into most people’s thought processes make it any less valuable (within reason – terrorism extremism and similar isn’t what I mean)?

Levy has brought some bloody good things to the spurs table.

He has spent money on players (Sanchez etc) but that is not anywhere near enough to make pochs squad strong and deep enough.

So levy has bought the boat but not pushed it out; it still remains in port.
Not dry dock but still moored and held back from really allowing it from showing the world exactly it can do.

And that is a sad thing.

Good for poch for expressing these opinions.
I hope levy sees the value of backing poch and speculates to accumulate as with this presser, the club is now at across roads.

And if levy can support poch, then they will take the right road.

But I still stand by what I said and referenced at the top of this post in context with what it was attached to on a previous blog and not in isolation.

Levy has done some great things, what gets my goat is him passing off stuff that is simply in his job description as ‘miracles’.

When I was a kid we won a few cups and I know what that feels like.

When I’m deluged with a list of stuff that ain’t cups, and told that these things are achievements, my brain turns into a melted DairyLea like substance and trickles down my neck.

The metric for football clubs is winning stuff.

Debate is good, but arguing black is white is less helpful.

Poch walks and we’re in trouble – he HAS produced bonafide miracles.

I’m proud of Poch for knocking all this ‘competing’ tosh on the head.

    More please.

    • Still Nil Nil May 14, 2018 at 12:49 pm

      Agreed.

  • James147 May 14, 2018 at 12:42 pm

Fascinating development this! Apparently meeting(s) this week and then Poch is away home to Spain at the weekend. Important few days coming up.

Guillem Balague said in January: “Pochettino is top of Real Madrid’s wanted list; he is number one, number two, number three and number four for Florentino Perez.”

Who knows if that’s true, but Poch is certainly now speaking like a man with leverage.

    • Erik May 14, 2018 at 1:52 pm

Come on, does anybody believe that chump, Balague?

          • Accy May 14, 2018 at 12:46 pm

KWP wanted to move unless he sees regular playing time.

Herc’s info was that Poch was being a bit ‘slow’ in holding him back from the first team – he thought Poch was being a bit stubborn in this respect.

            • Harry Hotspur May 14, 2018 at 12:48 pm

Poch is alway the same with the young lads. Winks took forever to break through as well.

KWP looked like a Premier League player yesterday. Perhaps Poch knew what he was doing?

Edwards everyone wanted – turns out Poch knew he was a pilchard.
Onomah everyone wanted – turns out Poch knew he was light.

              • Accy May 14, 2018 at 12:50 pm

Agree. I think Poch knows exactly what he is doing with the younglings.

                • Still Nil Nil May 14, 2018 at 12:54 pm

                  Poch gives players enough rope to do one of two things;

Either they hang them selves with it (kaboul, capoue etc)

Or they bide their time, shut their mouths, do as their told, learn their trade, and then get given an opportunity to break through.

If at this point they seem keen but not strong enough, they move on.

If not they hang around with the first team squad and hopefully get a chance to pursue their careers at Tottenham.

A leopard doesnt change its spots and I dont see Levy loosening the purse strings ; and it is a bit rich for Poch to call for something more adventurous when in truth he has hardly shown that quality himself in team selection. However in fairness to him I think it is reasonable to judge him by way of resources spent ( Harry would argue it should be on resources available which may be another matter ) and I dont think he has done badly. If you look at the top 6 clubs Arsenal and Chelsea are 6th and 5th in the table and would stay in that order for money spent. I would suggest that Tottenham have done better than Man U in expenditure terms especially given the brand of football that United have churned out in recent years which bores people to death . That leaves Man city and Liverpool and it is difficult to judge between the two for value. City have produced the most attractive football in many years but at what cost ? Someone do the maths for me but I reckon their reserve team ( which could arguably include Stones Delph and Aguero ) probably cost as much as our first team. That leaves Liverpool who play exciting football and though only 4th have reached the European Cup Final. So overall I would go Liverpool , Man City, Spurs , Man U , Chelsea and Arsenal. Room for improvement but not a disaster………..To which Harry will no doubt say you are missing the point or words less kind !

  • Camus May 14, 2018 at 12:28 pm

Poch does now deserve better backing.
    He’s earned it.
I’ve mentioned a few times that 25 of the last 30 domestic trophies have been won by United, City, Chelsea and Arsenal.
    Money… Pure and simple.

I’ll add that Pool have won 1 trophy in that last decade – a solitary League Cup.
Their fans should also be asking some questions – we pretty much always finish above them in the league now – but their owners have shown ambition to kick on, Coutinho was well-replaced and they haven’t missed a beat since he left.
They’re also in the CL final, which if they win, we will all hear about forever…
And that would be 2 trophies in a decade.

We’re the odd ones out – no trophy in a decade.
I could praise Levy for not turning us into Everton – righto, well done, chap…
But we’re in the top 6 and are now a CL team 3 years running.
What’s it all about if not silverware – when you’re at the top table?
    What’s it all for?

An expensive day out and a box of popcorn doesn’t cut it for a top 6 footie fan.
Not when those other 5 teams are hoovering up all the trophies.

    • caveman May 14, 2018 at 12:38 pm

Bad buys have to a large degree added to lack of depth. Seems its all too easy to write negative stuff about spurs (not you) when in reality the improvement of last 3 years should be enjoyed aling with an awesome new stadium

  • Harry Hotspur May 14, 2018 at 12:27 pm

Poch needs not just funds but a strategy to let him build a team.

Selling players and letting him reinvest 82% of it or whatever we’ve been doing doesn’t fakin work.

All that does is push us into Europe, push us into semi finals where we ultimately fail.

    Always fail.

    • caveman May 14, 2018 at 12:31 pm

And Poch stops licking Lloris’s arse and makes Toby captain when he extends his contract.

    • Ahole May 14, 2018 at 12:42 pm

Levy doesnt make us fail in the seni, five players playing badly does. And the 82% thing is a strategy, just not one you agree with but there isnt one you agree with

      • Harry Hotspur May 14, 2018 at 1:08 pm

It is a strategy – one that does not work.

Please see ‘one cup in 20 years’ for further details.

I agree with backing Poch with some first choice players.

Try reading what I write – before posting invention.

    • Ahole May 14, 2018 at 2:15 pm

Yes it has worked its been in place for almost 4 years and we have finished in the top 3 since its been in place, that is an inprovement and we have never acheived that before. You mention one cup in 20 years, the strategy has only been in place for the last 4 of those. You keep mentioning winning a cup as the most inportant thing, one assumes because its your best shot to back your constant negative posts and point of view. The trouble is all prem managers are playing weaker sides in both cup comptetions which suggests they all disagree with you on how important they are is football today. Harry you have a mission and a message and its all about not liking Levy. It does add to great posts in here from a variety of people, thanks for that.

  • Al May 14, 2018 at 12:27 pm

    Yep. Yep yep yep.

I was rowing with the usual deludeds yesterday who were calling this an outstanding season. I said it was grim and i’d be glad to see the back of it.

Well old Pochy clearly didn’t think it was outstanding. He knows we’re now going backwards as the final points and position demonstrate.

If Levy doesn’t give in over this and Poch isn’t in charge next season, that’s me done for a bit.

Whatever happens, it really doesn’t bode well that it’s reached the point that Poch is having to call him out publicly (far rather this, mind, than he continues with the fib of this season showing more progress).

Fucking stick it to them Poch.

it was actually a pretty good season in the league considering we had to wrestle at first with a supposed ” Wembley Hoodoo”! It is, however a little ingenuous of us to say we played 38 games AWAY, because though Wembley is far from an ideal home ground we did have the vast majority of support ie HOME support each week

I read the news today oh boy
about a lucky man who’s made the grade
and though the news came from Glad…
It was Levy that felt kind of sad thinking about
ho many holes we’ll see in the new stadium

Poch woke up got out of bed
it was a dream he always had
found his way downstairs and called a cab
grabbed his coat grabbed his hat
wanted to go to Madrid a seconds flat

Got a call from Joe to stay right there
Poch told Joe that the cupboard was bear

I read the news today oh boy
A hundred million just arrived today….

I’m pleased Poch has spoken out, and in a professional manner too may I add. Like most of us, we knew something was up behind the scenes as the player performances and Poch’s demeanour has seemed off for a few weeks now.

Poch has taken us as far as he can IMO – yes he is stubborn and yes, his tactics are off sometimes, but I’m not convinced ENIC will find anyone better if he leaves.

And if he goes, so do several of the players; not just Rose and Toby. The project will be broken and we will be back to scrapping it out for the Europa.

If ENIC pride themselves on being business savvy, they will surely see that the best way of promoting the Spurs brand; attracting revenue from industry and fans; and bringing in quality players (as well as retaining those we have), will be to spend. Not on quantity, but quality. I do not want to see half a dozen Ligue 1 layabouts, rather we concentrate on 3-4 top drawer next level signings.

First task for Levy this week should be to reassure Poch that funds will be in place and his Number 1 targets will be approached (not 3rd or fourth). Then get Toby in the office and draw up a suitable contract and make him Vice-capt (with Verts given the main job).

Then get active in the transfer market; get rid of the chaff (we all know who they are) and offer respectable bids for targets – not derisory offers that offend Directors and make it difficult to progress. Let’s make bids and get 2-3 players in asap. A few extra additions and refinements later on is fine so long as the squad is primarily complete and able to hit the ground running pre-season.

If Poch walks I think their will be an outcry as it will unfortunately speak volumes.

Levy KNOWS that also. He’s in a corner.

On reflection we’ve had a decent season in spite of winning zero trophies. But we’re not looking to stand still here, if we are looking to progress then the only way we can improve is by winning silverware. Poch knows this, we all know this. He’s 4 years into the “project” and he wants to continue looking forwards. So he has to put pressure on Levy and the board to back him, otherwise Poch will know it’s time to look for a new challenge

Decent relative to certain others and to our past but NOT decent to where we’ve been the last few years/were headed.

Under the cirumstances Pochohontas has done an admirable job at THFC. The squad needs new impetus and investment in the playing staff. I think Pochohontas had a gut feeling about the semi final and didn’t want to big it up after the Juventus fiasco. He needs quality and if the club do not give him the money then he will find a club that will. A players career span in football is short and if opportunities as witnessed with Walker comes along then players will go irrespective of a nice shiny stadium.

A friend of mine has a garage up north.

It’s very small, and situated in a side street in what is effectively a village and has just one pit or whatever they are called.

I was told the turnover by this friend’s father and I nearly fell over.

My point being that building a whackin great shopping mall is meaningless. It might make you look successful, but it is simply cosmetic.

You don’t enjoy a rubbish movie by watching it in a deluxe cinema.

Look at us watching streams in Arabic that stop every few minutes and are out of focus.

People want the best mechanic, no the flashiest premises.
People want the best films, the seat is secondary.
People want Spurs win, the fact that the grass is imported from Tokyo is irrelevant.

Go Poch go. You are the driver, keep driving.
