Name Your Favourite 5 Of Your Generation

Picture 84

Here’s one to fire us along nicely in the afterglow of the Toon win. I want to know your favourite 5 Spurs players of your generation. Which is to say, your favourite 5 players to have donned the Lilywhite during your time as a supporter. So if you’re 25, you can’t include John White. If you’re of a similar vintage to ODM then you’ve a wider choice. In fact you could include players from the Hotspur Cricket Club if you wanted to.

Why 5? Well, it’s all well and good and noble being able to construct an all time XI, but when it’s from your generation this inevitably means compromise. And compromise is dull. Also this is designed to be fun, so if you want to name 5 strikers, knock yourself out.

Mine? I’ll share mine later on but it includes Teemu Tainio. This is your favourite 5. So if that means you want to includes Jason Dozzell then so be it. No right answers. Only yours.

  1. Ginola, gazza, lineker, o’hara, king

  2. Ossie, Chris Waddle, Gazza, Ginola, and Klinsmaan

  3. Bale, Modric, Ledley ,Lloris and Sandro, bare in mind I’m 16, don’t have a lot to choose from but I’m happy with my choices

  4. In no particular order

    1. Gary Lineker – he might be a bit irritating but he and Gazza were what pulled me onto this rollercoaster!
    2. Paul Gascoigne – see above
    3. Erik “The Viking” Thorstvedt – ever dependable without being spectacular
    4. Edward Sheringham – Teddy was one of the most intelligent players to have played in this country.
    5. Sir Ledley – Mr Tottenham.

Gareth Bale could worm his way onto the list and Jurgen Klinnsman was hard to leave out, as was Spurs through and through David Howells.

  5. Bale, King, Ginola, Freund & Berbatov

  6. I’ve picked mine only including those I’ve seen in my time :

    Klinsman
    Lineker
    Gazza
    Roberts
    Hoddle

If I could include players I’ve not seen then McKay, Jones, Blanchflower and Greaves would’ve pushed put all but Gazza.

From the current crop only Bale comes close but I have a secret manlove for Sandro :In-Love:

    COYS

  7. Hoddle. Waddle. Gazza. Ginola. Bale.

  8. 1) Gary Lineker
    2) Paul Gascoigne
    3) Teddy Sheringham
    4) Gary Mabbutt
    5) Eric Thorstvedt

    LEDLEY IS KING

  9. Too many to name but Greaves, Gilzean Jennings and Mackay must be in there somewhwere,.

  10. I’m 20, supporting since around 98, so slightly limited amount of players, all the same though,
    1. Bale- gotta be that man. Best player I’ve ever seen play probably, with the slight exception of RVP on his day when we got raped by the gooners 5-2 last year. Love the fact that he’s progressed during my teen years so he’s really just been there for my most fervent supporting times.
    2. VDV- yeah, I know another really recent guy but to be fair he just really captured the mind for me when he came. Just an incredible player and loved the way he was on the pitch. My favourite ever moment of his is a bit of an odd one too, when he once slid 4 or 5 foot right in front of me to keep a fast rolling ball in play, trapping it on the line. Pure quality player.
    3. Daaa-veeed. Was there right at the beginning of my supporting days, and I just loved everything he’d do. Love a good playmaker, me.
    4. Ledleyyyyy. Don’t really need to say much about him, he was a spurs player as long as i really could name a starting XI.
    5. Bit tough, but I’ll go with Defoe for one moment alone. (shame to leave out lennon for me, but…) Defoe’s five against Wigan. Being there, I know I’ll never be in a stadium as a spurs player gets five goals again, it was just beautiful. And he made a mundane Tottenham Wigan Game something of history.

  11. In no particular order:

    Ledders
    Ginola
    Klinsmaan
    Bale
    Teddy

  18. Jennings

Bale to displace one of them if he keeps playing like he has been!

  19. Only 5? Hmm.

King, Gazza, Mabbutt, Anderton, Waddle. Not necessarily in terms of ability. Honourable mentions to Hoddle, Ossie, Villa, Teddy and Clive Allen.

  24. Hoddle,
    Sheringham,
    Klinsmann,
    King,
    Bale.

    Lineker
    Gazza
    Bale
    King
    Hoddle

  31. Hoddle
    Conn
    Jennings
    Sheringham
    Berbatov

  32. 20 year old here and in my opinion: Bale, Ginola, King, Keane and Sheringham

  33. John (my real name)

I’m now 60 and I live in Australia (born in England)

Pat Jennings, Dave Mackay, Jimmy Greaves, Steve Perryman and Gary Linneker

  34. John (my real name)

Whoops – spelling and poor eyesight as well as a dodgy keyboard as an excuse……..

    Gary Lineker…………..(see previous post)

  35. Perryman
    Mabbut
    King
    Hoddle
    Ardiles

  36. Blanchflower
    Mackay
    Greaves
    White
    Perryman

  42. Chas, dave, lord sugar, herbert norris, peter herbert

Gazza lineker wadd jurgen bale I wld put H in there but only saw him 3 times so feel I just missed his generation

  43. GAZZA,
    BALE,
    MODRIC,
    KLINSMAN
    AND THE BEAST SANDRO

  44. Hoddle, Ardiles,Villa,Galvin,Waddle

  45. This is brilliant. Really enjoying seeing names from the different generations

    Hoddle, Gazza, Lineker, Ginola, errrrrrrrrrrrr?

  46. LEDLEY THE KING,
    VDV,
    LENNON,
    DAWSON,
    LINEKER

  47. GREAVES
    JENNINGS
    OSSIE
    HODDLE
    MACKAY

Could have had : Gazza, Lineker, Perryman, Knowles, Waddle, Klinnsman, Chivers, Gilzean
The only current player who could get into it in future is BALE
THose that I am too young to remember (I’m 50) but have heard so much about – White, Jones, Smith, Blanchflower
But the best 2 British players of all time – George Best and Duncan Edwards (never seen him but family in their 70′s and 80′s thought he was better than Best)

  48. Bale? No, Modric? No, Osvaldo? No, Berbashite?, No, I did like Ledley until met him in a bar and thought he was a twat. So NO, Bale? Errrrrrrrrrrrr?

  49. Hoddle- there was nothing he couldn’t do with a football.
Gazza- fingers crossed he gets better.
Ginola- a typical spurs flair player.
Mabbut- solid and bled white blood.
Last one is tricky, could have been Jurgen, Waddle, Lineker or No like chicken badge!!
But I’ve gone for Ledley- A true modern day great, just imagine if his
    knee wasn’t buggered!

  50. Here are my five , and in order :

    Jimmy Greaves… the ultimate predator… 466 goals in 14 seasons… 1st Div top scorer 6 times between 58/59 & 68/69… a record yet to be broken.. i can go on…and on
Dave Mackay.. the epitome of Scottish grit & determination… all round player to be found all around the pitch
Glen Hoddle.. the finesse, the precision, the power
Paul Gascoigne… the creativity, the spirit, and just being Gazza
Gareth Bale….the future.. meteoric rise from ‘unlucky’ left back to powerful unplayable left wing with license to roam

  51. Gascoigne
    Lineker
    Klinsmann
    Ginola
    Sheringham

Bale is close to knocking Teddy off this list if he continues his current form!!

  52. Tough but here goes

    Jennings
    McKay
    Greaves
    Hoddle
    Gaza

  53. Ok, a broad canvas to choose from, but my choices are:

    1) Teddy Sherigham
    2) Ossie Ardiles
    3) Gary Mabbutt
    4) Steve Archibald
    5) David Ginola

  54. In no particular order:

    Gary Lineker
    Gary Mabbutt
    Allan Nielsen
    Dimitar Berbatov
    Ledley King

  55. Graham Roberts
    Steve Archibald
    Glenn Hoddle
    Paul Gascoigne
    Ledley King

  56. Born at the end of 63 means that the ‘double’ players are technically within my grasp but I only really became properly aware of who was who as I approached about ten years old. So…….

    Hoddle
    Jennings
    Ardiles
    King
    Gascoigne

    Or

    Klinsmann
    Waddle
    Gilzean
    Mabbutt
    Roberts

    Or

    C Allen
    Ginola
    Hughton
    Sheringham
    Perryman

If I include those from when I was born but I can’t remember, then…

Mackay (Broke his leg the month I was born)
    Blanchflower
    White
    Greaves
    Jones

  57. Hoddle
    Paul Allen
    Ardiles
    Gascoigne
    Klinsmann

    or

    Mabbsy
    Roberts
    King
    Perryman
    Edinburgh

  58. Anderton
    King
    Huddlestone
    Kranjcar
    Corluka

  59. I started to write down Jennings, Hoddle, Greaves, Wadlle, Gascoigne and then gave up when Ginola, King, Bale, Klinnsman, Chivers, England, Gough, Mullery, Gilly came into my head

I wasnt old enough to see McKay in his pomp by spotted his successor at Brookfield Lane when I was about 13 – Graeme Sounness. Unfortunately Nicholson made a bad error of judgement there.

Hasnt it been a priveledge watching these superstars play for our team & pick the best 11 from that lot and we’d probably beat Barcalona!

  60. My generation is the players I saw play live regularly before work took me on a long and as yet unfinished journey away from my North London roots so:

    Alan Gilzean (of course!)
    Jimmy Greaves
    Pat Jennings
    Martin Chivers
    Mike England

    • Like you,Golzean was my favourite ever Spurs player.
So i’ll go for my five favourite (cult) players:
      Gilzean
      Conn
      Glenda
      Klinnsmann
BAE (like Cat in Red Dwarf)

  61. Hoddle
    Ardiles
    Gascoigne
    Ginola
    Bale

Subs: Klinsmann, Toda, Saib, Berti, Korsten

  62. Berbatov
    Nayim
    Lineker
    Sherringham
    Ginola

    Sandro soon VDV very close

  63. I’ll confine mine to my first stint of watching the boys every week.

    God
    Perryman
    Archibald
    Alfie Conn
    Pat Jennings

  64. ..no one mentioned garth crooks. so crooks .archibald. perryman [ gent].gazza.peters

  65. the man room room 5

    Greaves
    Jennings
    Perryman
    Ardiles
    Modric

  66. Born in 73, my famous 5 are.

    1) Ray Clemence
    2) Glenn Hoddle
    3) Ossie Ardiles
    4) Paul Gascgoine
    5) Graham Roberts

  67. 5 favourite –
    Teddy Sheringham
    David Ginola
    Dimitar Berbatov
    Ledley King
    Jurgen Klinsmann

  68. Jennings – Knowles – Hoddle – Chivers – Peters

  69. Hoddle, Waddle, Gough, King, Bale, could be a few more though. Roberts, P. Allen, Ginola, Stewart, Mabbutt, Archibald, Crooks, Perryman, Ardiles, Falco, Klinsmann, Gascoygne, Galvin – All could’ve been on the list.

If we could’ve kept the 87 Pleat team together with Richard Gough at the back, we could’ve won the league

  70. Anderton
    Sherringham
    Ginola
    Klinnsmann
    Mabbutt

  71. HODDLE
    WADDLE
    ARDILES
    GAZZA
    GINOLA

  72. Lineker gazza klinsmann sheringham king.

  73. Tough one HH, but after careful consideration;

    Greaves
    Mackay
    Ardilles
    Hoddle
    Klinsman

    Oh, and the Europa League version;

    Gazza
    King
    Ginola
    Sherringham
    Jennings

OF the present squad only Bale and Sandro have a chance of breaking in….

  74. Mabbut
    Gazza
    klinsmann
erm…Ali Dick and Mitchel Thomas Be Happy

  75. 1. Daines
    2. Hoddle
    3. Roberts
    4. Klinsmann
    5. Ginola

  76. In no order:

Archibald, Hoddle, Tainio, Pavlyuchenko, Gary Mabbutt

  77. In no particular order:

    1 – Gascoigne
    2 – Ginola
    3 – Klinsmann
    4 – Hoddle
    5 – Perryman

    What, no one got Campbell?
(anyone else hate seeing old footage of him in a Spurs shirt)? Just ruins me enjoying watching old matches Judas

  78. It’s difficult naming only 5!

    Gascoigne
    Klinsmann
    King
    Poyet
    Bale

  79. Very difficult :

    Steve Perryman
    Ossie Ardiles
    Glen Hoddle
    Gazza
    Clive the goal machine Allen

  80. Perryman
    Hoddle
    Gascoigne
    Klinsmann
    The boy Bale……….

  81. Greaves. Of course.

    Hoddle.

    Blanchflower.

    David Craig Mackay

    Gazza.

    I think I’ll re-register and put in another 5.

  82. This is my unfashionable 5

    Peter Collins
    Jimmy Holmes
    Micky Hazard
    Ricky Villa
    Roger Morgan

    • I’ve definitely also got one of them…..
      Nico Claesen
      Tony Galvin
      Nayim
      Alfie Conn
      Richard Gough

      • I loved Goughie, but does a season and a bit count? I saw Claessen’s début at Anfield when we beat them-I thought-Brilliant- however Vegetables thought otherwise-he also ditched one of the finest technical players I’d ever seen with Johnny Method (?) yet bought in Walsh and other rubbish and played Samways instead of him, strange yet true!

        • I missed 2 games that season and Gough was faultless, I was absolutely gutted when I heard he was going back to Scotland. Claesen was a terrier with an eye for goal, Metgod was good, but being billed as the new Hoddle was never going to work.

      • nayim was quality, fabulous touch. set up stewart at wembley and took corner that walker scored the winner for us. and that volley v Lpool is one of may all time fav goals. and thats before you start talking half way lines..
also he played the other year in the 5 a side masters for us and still had it #lovinmohammedaliamar

  83. Can I have some (slightly) unsung heroes of mine?
    1) Frank Saul
    2) Phil Beal
    3) Cyril Knowles
    4) Jimmy Pearce
    5) Peter Baker
I was going to have Jimmy Robertson, but the obvious reason prohibits his inclusion.

  84. Roberts
    Hoddle
    Ardiles
    Sheringham
    Klinsmann

  85. ginola
    assou-ekotto
    bale
    klinsmann
    king

  86. Too hard. Need at least 25.

  87. Hoddle, Ginola, Keane, Berbatov, Bale…King would have made it if it wasn’t for those pesky knees

  88. Keane is getting a rough ride here – yes the Liverpool debacle was awful but he was our only bright spark for two of three seasons and his pairing with Berbs is the best partnership we’ve had ON ANY PART OF THE PITCH in the last fifteen years. Better than Modders/VdV, better than King alongside any of his defensive partners (Dawson/Kaboul/etc). Scored some stunning volleys, nearly ripped apart the net when scoring a penalty, plus all of that pointy shouty stuff…

  89. 1. Jennings, Archibald, Gazza, Gilzean, Knowles

  90. No Ralphie ?

  91. This is the ony advantage of being over 60, there are so many to choose from.

    Jimmy Greaves
    Bobby Smith
    Martin Chivers
    Gazza
    Glen Hoddle

  92. Blogs have ground to a halt, need a new Topic, how’s about this then,
    The Pope’s resigned………run a poll.

  93. FW2, Did a treble tonight,
    Angers 1/1 won 3-2
    Drogheda 5/6 won 3-2
Real Betis 10/11 currently 0-0 with 34 mins left

Angers were 2-1 down going into the 90th min, scored on 90 and 93 mins ( 5 mins added ).
Cork City had a good win tonight. 4-0.

  94. How many of the current Spurs squad would get into a Premier League 15 ?
I reckon Lloris, Sandro when fit and Bale.
Vertonghen started superbly but has deteriorated since xmas.

  95. Damiao
    Moutinho
    Hazzard
    Llorente
    Willian

  96. This was bloody tough but eventually I got:

    Sheringham
    Mabbutt
    Ginola
    Ledley
and a guilty pleasure in Freund.
If the same question is asked a few years down the line I reckon Sandro would take Freunds place.

    Good fun Harry!

  97. Top 5 favourite players
    Hoddle, Ginola, Gazza, Teddy, Jurgen

Honourable mentions to young Stevie Carr, Mabbut, Gough, Ziege, Ziegler, Carrick and Freund. And just for the sheer comedy value Timotee Atouba.
