I’ve always loved us playing in Europe. Being an overseas fan as a kid, Spurs somehow felt closer to me the further out of London, they went.

My link to the Lilywhites in the pre Internet age was by way of radio, press cuttings and the once in a blue moon opportunity of watching them on the TV.

A sizable chunk of my 10 Deutschmarks a week pocket money went in postal orders to a programme reseller whose every manilla brown envelope seemed to take months to arrive. God I was a happy little fan then.

I’d spend hours drawing up shortlists of the programmes that I wanted. My hit list. This would be whittled down in priority order. My plan was to capture all the home ones for the centenary season, along with games that had a particular resonance to me.

I remember putting off and putting off buying the 1967 FA Cup Final one forever because lots of resellers had it, and it was 4 or 5 times the price of regular one. When the pocket money had taken a hit with other distractions, you could always pick up some random, unwanted rarity like a Gillingham vs Spurs in the League Cup for buttons.

Anyway, Europe and Lilywhite shirts blazing under the lights.

Back then, Europe was quite frankly exotic. Now, Europe for us means an additional half a season spent traipsing to places that even Kate Adie would have to Google. Playing games at teatime, against the likes of FC Plinkplonk in front of three man and a dog.

The Champions League has devalued the currency of every other cup in its wake. Arguably, you could include the World Cup to the list.

It’s a sad indictment of where we are as a club, that now we draw a side of genuine quality, we’re not fit to give them a game.

We’ll just crack on with what else we’ve got. It ain’t a bad team.”

To be fair Daniel’s always asking: ‘Are you sure you don’t need to strengthen in this area? Can I help you in this or that area?’. I’m saying: ‘Look, I’m confident in the players we’ve got and I don’t need any help to strengthen, thanks very much’. “

I’m not crying about it, I knew what I was coming in to and that it would be very difficult. I’ve been dealt a hand and I’m playing the players accordingly.”

Tomorrow’s game will require a comeback of Lazarus proportions. In the Bible, we are told that Lazarus of Bethany is restored to life by Jesus, after 4 days. Of being dead. This will be the fourth night since the Arsenal defeat.

The chances of Jorge Jesus playing a hand in bringing back from the morgue tomorrow evening, are approximately zero.
