Robbie Fowler has been waxing lyrical about love, life and Spurs in particular and I want to know what you ‘orrible lot make of this:

“City have spent the best part of £200m already, Chelsea will strengthen massively and United have spent £150m so far, with no sign of stopping.

Arsenal have made a couple of decent-looking buys, too, Liverpool no doubt will and Everton are pushing with their impressive summer so far.

So, if Spurs stay still in the transfer market, it could see them go backwards rapidly. That’s the wonderful world of the Premier League these days – you may need to spend £200m to stay still.”

You know my view. Wembley is like a good horse being handicapped so heavily that you cannot afford to leave anything to chance. The very boys and girls in the yard looking after her, and come the race the services of the most talented jockey you can secure.

Can Spurs afford to stand still?

  • Caspurs♿️ July 17, 2017 at 10:41 am

I don’t mind Spurs buying quality young talent for the future, but it should be funded with a development budget, and not use finances earmarked for first team recruitment.
I have no idea if this is the case or not with us, just a sensible approach imo.

  • caveman July 17, 2017 at 10:27 am

We cannot be serious, scoffing at every new recruit as though it was a big insult. Looking back Dier, Kane, Dele or Rose would have earned cries of horror and indications that we were struggling to keep up, but they’re now worth about £350m. This lad Foyth looks very good and, I for one, would welcome his signing. If Poch thinks Barclay is worth signing, I’m in. We have to support the best manager in the prem because the chelsea’s and man u’s of this world will be trying to snap him up in no time. Negative lot you are.

    • Caspurs♿️ July 17, 2017 at 10:37 am

I never scoffed at signing Alli, I was positively excited about his arrival. I must confess he has exceeded all expectations, yay!

    • mattspurs July 17, 2017 at 10:48 am

I’m a bonkers flat earther full of positivity. That said I rushed to judgement on Kane and rose and thought they’d never be anywhere near the level they are.
Poch is quite a strange bloke and puts a lot of trust in the power of positive thinking and wants to install it across the club – it’s almost like he’s trying to create a cult. I feel that Poch has such a strong sense of his system and the team being much more important than any player. Quite simply Poch doesn’t want any big time charlies, he wants players to go onto the pitch and carry out the orders he has given them. Younger players given chances will trust him, older players who have seen managers come and go may feel that a manager is fallible.

    • Sexy Beast July 17, 2017 at 8:30 am

Definitely, but Levy would not pay the price to get him out of Leicester or the wages he would command.
That said not sure the Poochmiester would want him…..

    • Harry Hotspur July 17, 2017 at 8:54 am

Precisely the sort of player we should be buying – won’t happen

  • peterballb July 17, 2017 at 2:53 am

While it would be nice to have had some signings come in, reality is, other than perhaps a winger, we are not looking for a starter and very unlikely to be bringing in a guaranteed starter within our salary structure. Much harder to buy experienced, competent competition for positions. Is Siggy really going to come and get paid within our structure to sit and hope to play every once and a while. Give him enough money and he will. Not sure I can see Levy doing that. Barkley may but his time as a starter in such a squad is still to come. So we are looking for younger players who cannot get regular first team play elsewhere. Not going to happen until later in the window. Sissoko, who knew he would not be first choice, came only when it was the best option he had amongst those willing to pay.

It is also worth noting that our net spend last year of $34.3M was easily eclipsed by Arsenal (84.7), Chelsea (87.4), United (143.1) and City (155.4). Only one of those finished ahead of us in the table. Yes, we need to start winning things. Fact is, Poch, Levy and the lads are all still learning how to do that. Will they get there? Who knows. Many of the pieces, I would argue are there. So long as the ownership remains the same, we need to make things work within our structure. Not easy, but it can be done. We have slowly improved now for over a decade. That will continue.

    • Harry Hotspur July 17, 2017 at 8:15 am

There are perhaps a few flaws there, Peter. Poch doesn’t use wingers, we do need starters otherwise our bench stays mediocre; even if you ignore the recent spend of all the clubs you list – what guarantees are there that history will repeat itself if we stand still?

Poch and this squad are NOT learning how to win things. The league was the only competition we didn’t ‘throw’. Finally, given that that nobody on planet earth has a footballing metric for measuring degrees of failure, do you acknowledge that the improvement is fundamentally financial, and this has been questionable given the colossal debt we are taking on, which now includes the misdirection of some £30.5million from the council’s social housing budget?

  • EDSpurs July 17, 2017 at 1:46 am

So Levy has now proven that being a disruptive c**t gets you a mega money move away from his smoke and mirrors carousel. In no way will this set a precedent, just look at the players we are bringing in……………………….

Victor Wanyama has apparently unfollowed Bonzo on Twitter following his move.

Considering how much Wanyama is obviously a Poch man this might suggest that Walker could well have acted like a prick in order to get his move.

Either that or Wanyama wasn’t great mates with him anyway, whatever the case I expect the rest of the squad to follow suit. He’s gone, why follow him on Twitter unless he’s an amusing Tweeter or something. Which I very much doubt…

    • Nick July 17, 2017 at 12:11 am

He seemed to think he was a bit of a joker and more important to the team than he was. Not sure Poch wanted him long term but probably didn’t want to lose him this summer particularly.

    • East Stand July 17, 2017 at 12:14 am

Also, has Bonzo thanked the Spurs fans or released a statement to that affect?

The more this plays out it seems he was tapped up to double his wages and behaved like a child at the back end of a season where we were right in the title race. Selfish twat?

    • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? July 17, 2017 at 12:11 am

He looked way above that level. Should be in the u 21’s now. He’s 20, most of them opposition players looked like kids of 18. Can’t judge him on that, seen nothing for spurs to suggest anything, not like winks. Kane looked like nothing early on so you never know. A lot of loose touches and passes though got away with cos of level of opposition.

      • Willie! July 17, 2017 at 1:32 am

He’s gonna get found out quickly in the league, give away possession a lot if he doesn’t start getting rid of the ball quicker when under pressure. He may hold off some green 18yo kids that don’t tackle well, that’s not going to work against real competition.

My doctor has advised me to stop eating my own words after making so many predictions about Tottenham’s upcoming seasons. Apparently my words are full of pre-season transfacts which have caused my arteries to harden. After a recent visit with my cardiologist I stated that we were not a “selling” team and we would probably be buying up to three new players in order to improve on last season. He told me that I cannot afford to eat those words because they will worsen my condition by directly affecting my blood pressure. I responded to him using “Ronglish” whereupon he thought that I was having a stroke. Daniel Levy is not good for my health. I can’t even get health insurance for the Levy effect because it’s deemed as a pre-existing condition.

Levy was at Southampton docks checking out the suitability of shipping containers for use as possible executive boxes at the new ground. He bumped into an Argentinian bloke who said he’d work for minimum wage and expect his players to do the same, the rest is history…

I’ve not been a fan of Pogba in the past but, with a full season under his belt now, I have a horrible feeling he’ll be a major force in the PL next year.

      • mattspurs July 16, 2017 at 8:33 pm

So an £86m player needs a season to bed in but the likes of Janssen and N’Koudou need to get up to speed instantly according to many on here

        • East Stand July 16, 2017 at 9:30 pm

That’s a fair point Mattspurs, well said.

  • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? July 16, 2017 at 7:39 pm

If poch went I want bielsa cos he’s bonkers. Plus some of the best football I’ve ever seen was his Bilbao team a few years back. They went to old Trafford in the Europa and took the piss.

    • East Stand July 16, 2017 at 7:45 pm

Bielsa was Poch’s mentor I think, so you want someone to do the same thing as Poch essentially?

      • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? July 16, 2017 at 7:48 pm

Oh yeah, that’s right he did have close relations with poch. Bielsa though…different kettle of alligators. Never get the job cos he would not take shit from levy.

        • East Stand July 16, 2017 at 9:32 pm

No loose cannons or assertive mavericks can get a job at Levy & Co…

  • Sexy Beast July 16, 2017 at 7:37 pm

Yo Harold, would you swap The Poochmiester for any other manager in the world right now? In a hyperthetical of course.

  • Sexy Beast July 16, 2017 at 7:32 pm

Everton spent loads and not one of the new boys would get in our team, same with Manure although i don’t know anything about Lindorf or whatever his name is.
Arsenal spent 52M on a forward who is 26 and never played for his country, and still managed by Auntie, Liverpool might be a concern due to how they played the top six last season.
Chelscum will be the team to beat whilst Citeh can’t defend and their manager doesn’t know anything about defending.
To summerise, not concerned about the oppo if we can add 2/3 improvements to the bench, if we beat Newcastle and Chelski first two games the title is ours……and i’m a pessimist!!

    • YidInExile July 16, 2017 at 7:36 pm

Get in the team, no, strengthen the sqaud, yes, Sandro and the Dutch oik for dure

  • YidInExile July 16, 2017 at 7:29 pm

We only need to spend 70 mil to make us real contenders
Thats less than we sold for

    • East Stand July 16, 2017 at 7:49 pm

If only billionaire Joe would stick his hand in his pocket to help just a tad.

When people go in about their club being owned by billionaires it only means anything in real terms if THEY invest rather than inviting others to invest for them.

Woolwich have billionaires who own them too but only Citeh and Chavs actually have their owners spending anything…

  • Paulspurs July 16, 2017 at 7:27 pm

Trippier alderweireld son wanyama dele ??????

    • YidInExile July 16, 2017 at 7:29 pm

      Yes

  • Paulspurs July 16, 2017 at 7:23 pm

Correct now let’s live in the real world our players haven’t been bought through pure luck u make odd mistake poch buys good players and makes them better most of the time nobody knows. Who he is after do u want him to be like mourinho shouting his mouth off our manager is a class act now leave him to it coys

    • Harry Hotspur July 16, 2017 at 7:24 pm

      ‘poch buys good players’

      Eh?

    • mikespurs July 16, 2017 at 7:31 pm

Love poch but………. no he hits 1 outta 4 on his transfers. His squad rotation, piss poor (granted he doesnt have much to pick from). & his subs are at times mindboggling. I.e we are down a goal & he subs a dm for a dm. Hes young & improves every year. But he is not jesus christ reincarnated

      • Sexy Beast July 16, 2017 at 7:33 pm

We buy potential most of the time, so allow some misses amoungst the hits…….

        • mikespurs July 16, 2017 at 7:38 pm

I do, & our hits have been incredible. I would argue at this time with all thats at stake. Taking a punt now would be a mistake, believe me, hope im wrong

      • Freund or Foe July 16, 2017 at 7:38 pm

Don’t think so Mike. 16 players in since he arrived. Tobes, Dier, Dele, Victor, Trippier and Son are pretty much first teamers. Davies, Wimmer and Vorm have proved to be decent squad players, and there were signs that Vinny was getting there towards the end of last season. I think that compares pretty well to other team’s transfer dealings.

        • caveman July 16, 2017 at 7:44 pm

Not forgetting N’Koudou, who may break into the team this season.

          • Freund or Foe July 16, 2017 at 7:47 pm

            I didn’t forget N’koudou.

        • mikespurs July 16, 2017 at 8:06 pm

Correct me if im wrong, but this is the way i see it. Dier/alli was in the works before him. Toby/wanna he already coached so they were known quantities.son was bought by levy for the asian market same way yed was bought for the us market. Turns out son is really good. Always thought tripps was a smart buy off burnley. Like i said we hit gold with a few of these guys but shouldnt be our transfer policy. I think our luck can quickly turn against us now

          • mattspurs July 16, 2017 at 8:37 pm

Toby wasn’t at Southampton with Poch.

Poch gave Dele and Dier their debuts – he has given them huge opportunities that others may not have

  • Sid Trotter July 16, 2017 at 7:21 pm

I don’t think we should buy anyone. Levy needs a pay rise so does Mr Lammy.

    • mikespurs July 16, 2017 at 7:22 pm

Dont forget mr. Purple with the candle stick in the library

  • Nick July 16, 2017 at 7:18 pm

3 Chelsea players that have ‘Premier League Winners’ medals at home?

  • ForzaYids July 16, 2017 at 7:08 pm

Says a lot about ambition of a team when we are linked with players that teams in mid table are linked with. When you sign a player you aim to strengthen the first 11. If by chance you do that then you also strengthen the bench.

    • mattspurs July 16, 2017 at 7:25 pm

linked by who? Agents, journos etc

      No he’s not.

      • is Gascoigne gonna have a crack? July 16, 2017 at 6:52 pm

As much as i Desperately want to believe that if without strengthening and with a season at wembers we finish below city, Chelsea, utd and scum/Liverpool, IE outside top 4, our star players just want to stick around for sheer love and to see the completion of the cheese room( yes! Got one in!), I am not confident that will be the case unks.

    • mikespurs July 16, 2017 at 6:49 pm

Kane is loving life at the minute,Top cat,Top earner making headlines & memories at the club he want to be at.He sees things are moving in the right direction on & off the pitch, very different to teddy having to go to win things but give it a couple of years of stagnation & maybe then, maybe

      • mikespurs July 16, 2017 at 7:02 pm

Like i said, after he becomes a spurs legend, thats when ill worry he’ll move on. If levy cant pull his head out of his arse

  • richspurs July 16, 2017 at 6:36 pm

Manure, Shitty, Cheatski and Arse, spending more in one window than whai it costs us to build a new stadiium. Perspective man.

    • Harry Hotspur July 16, 2017 at 6:41 pm

      Oh grow up.

The fucking stadium cost has zero relation to what 3 Premier League sides are spending.

      Really?

  • Lord Croker July 16, 2017 at 6:19 pm

  • coys1882 July 16, 2017 at 6:13 pm

    Short answer, no!

Longer answer. The way I expect this to unfold is that we get 3 or 4 younger players of ability and promise for Poch to hone into top class players for our system. We both know we are not going to spend top dollar on proven internationals, or even more remotely world class stars, who would immediately improve the actual starting XI. Therefore, like it or not, our best hope as fans is shrewd investment in well scouted younger talent who will swiftly mature under Poch’s coaching into top class players, like Alli, Dier, Eriksen, Son, Alderweireld, etc, as opposed to blunders/cheap punts like N’Jie, Sissoko, Fazio.

We finished last season in outstanding form and we have only lost Walker, who had already been surpassed by Trippier. We still clearly need to strengthen the squad in certain areas, the only debatable question is which areas? In my opinion, RB, CB (if Wimmer goes), CM, CF. So possibly Pereira, Barclay, King, Suso. I have some hopes for Vincent Janssen having a breakout year this year and importantly a return to past performance levels of our injured stars Lamela, Winks and especially Danny Rose. Even N’Cluedo is reportedly looking sharp and might surprise us!

In summary, I am more concerned about the Wembley effect for this season than the strength of the team. Despite my more cynical misgivings, I cannot believe that Levy will screw this transfer window up and risk alienating Poch, therefore after his customarily tortuous negotiating machinations and last minute changes of agreement, I am expecting that several of Poch’s top targets will, eventually, be brought on board, although as usual too late to be fully integrated into our pre-season training regimen.

    Sorted.

  • Paulspurs July 16, 2017 at 5:49 pm

Transfer window opened 2 weeks ago because other teams going buck daft doesn’t mean we have to fergie said strength is only tinkering with team and squad and he knows a hell of a lot more than Harry coys

  • Pj July 16, 2017 at 5:48 pm

Lacazett at Woolwich and lukaku still aren’t as good as Kane!
Not one of Everton’s signings would start for us!!
Bernard at city is the one top signing.
Remember our team is pure quality! Who can we afford who is out there to take a spot in our first 11??
What quality is out there that might have to sit on our bench?
If Barkley comes the kid has balls and is willing to compete because he knows how difficult it’s going to be.

  • col July 16, 2017 at 5:45 pm

It may be that Dan Levy has a masterstroke to spring on us.However it is a long time since a transfer window produced a diamond for us.We always seem to get the chaff and never the good stuff. We are so close to greatness but that final step keeps eluding us or Dan does,nt do the bizz.

    • mattspurs July 16, 2017 at 5:56 pm

      A long time?

      • Harry Hotspur July 16, 2017 at 6:01 pm

Wanyama – proven top notch Premier League enforcer.
Alli – worst kept secret in football.

        Dier – isn’t brilliant. Wouldn’t be missed.

        • UnkleTaff July 16, 2017 at 6:06 pm

          • Harry Hotspur July 16, 2017 at 6:25 pm

            Benevo, mate.

Tried a couple, but he deffo likes this one best.

He has it with aquafarba and a dollop of beans/pulses du jour.

            • UnkleTaff July 16, 2017 at 6:31 pm

Benevo, eh? Mine too. One of my pair has been a fussy eater in the past but never a problem with Benevo.

And I confess to never having heard of aquafaba before. I see you can make lemon meringue pies with it. *That* interests me greatly…

              • Harry Hotspur July 16, 2017 at 6:36 pm

It’s the posh name for the watery gloop in can of chick peas or cannelini beans. 100% good as an egg substitute.

                • UnkleTaff July 16, 2017 at 6:40 pm

I’ve been throwing that stuff away up to now. And to think it’s the egg substitute I’ve been looking for all along.

        • Mattspurs July 16, 2017 at 6:14 pm

          Oh come on

Wanyama was a yellow card magnet and a thug – people moaned that he was a poor signing
Dele was playing in League One – who was the last player to perform in the PL after a move from there?
          Dier – a £4m investment who’s now a £40m target

None of them caused any excitement on here

          • Harry Hotspur July 16, 2017 at 6:21 pm

            Er…

Was it you that made this ‘thug’ reference recently? If I recall correctly he did chuck it about a bit initially but was then as undroppable as he has been at Southampton.

Dele was the worst kept secret in the Championship. You may wish to note that MK Dons were subsequently relegated.

Dier may well be worth £60m even on the back pages. He’s not actually that brilliant.

            • mikespurs July 16, 2017 at 6:38 pm

Brilliant no. Indispensable yes. I know the dier/wanna role didnt work well to start. But, i see wanna being a future dembele with dier filling the wall infront of our pack three. Now that we dont have both rose/walker bombing down the lines, tripps ( a better offensive option) but will be exposed to speed on the flank. We will need that cover in the middle. Love dem but see him being phased out in the next 2 years

            • mattspurs July 16, 2017 at 7:41 pm

I don’t have copyright on the thug thing but there was certainly a feeling that Arsenal had bought a much better player in Xhaka. He did pick up 3 reds in his last season but under Poch he’s been more disciplined.

          • mikespurs July 16, 2017 at 6:48 pm

I disagree, loved wanna signing, the minute alli nutmeg modric, knew we had something. To be honest didnt think hed be this good. & diers versitility is indispennsable. Unfort these lucky signings has made levy think he can punt on a low ball player & they will turn to gold. We got lucky……..dont push the luck

  • mattspurs July 16, 2017 at 5:41 pm

They all spent really big last season and only Chelsea finished above us. Man City, like us won nothing.
The slight difference this year is that we have one first team player leaving

  • Still Nil Nil July 16, 2017 at 5:41 pm

Spurs do need reinforcements, we all know that.
But they have to be square pegs for square holes.
Spending 200m just for the sake of it and then saying ‘look we spent this and we remain where we were already’ doesn’t mean anything.
As good a striker as fowler was doesn’t make him an expert in this area.
The one thing I will give him credit for was winding up le saux to the point of distraction!

    He may be right
    He may be wrong
But if buying the right players costs less than simply just buying players for the sake of it I know which I prefer.

    • UnkleTaff July 16, 2017 at 5:46 pm

Fowler also said this of Vincent Janssen:

“The Dutch lad Vincent Janssen hasn’t cut it either, and he does not look Tottenham class. I am not slagging him, just being realistic – he is not good enough to replace Harry Kane.”

I’ve got news for you Robbie — no one is.

      • marsinho July 16, 2017 at 5:53 pm

not many striker out there to replace kane and as for vinny i think another season won’t do us any harm since scoring wasn’t our problem but our bench let us down for back ups, i wont mind barkley mawson and that porto RB for starters.

        • UnkleTaff July 16, 2017 at 6:01 pm

Reports suggest that Pochettino is an admirer of young Sterling and that he might get a chance or two next season. He’s looked very promising whenever I’ve seen him. I think he’s going on the US tour next week so hopefully he’ll get some playing time there.

  • marsinho July 16, 2017 at 5:38 pm

the others can spend until the suns dying embers but that didn’t hinder our progress finishing 2nd as long as levy backs mo and brings in our long overdue bloody targets of witch we’re not certain in this mad window.
