100% Stats: Was It Foyth’s Fault?

By The Boy -

The benching of Toby Alderweireld was surely Poch’s way of managing the Belgian’s expectations for the summer.

Pochettino who is ordinarily so measured with youth players suddenly decide that Foyth was the superior player for this North London Derby.

So was it bad decision?

Well, beyond an abysmal passing accuracy percentage of just 63.6%, he had a kind of a good game.

Which somewhat applauding a surgeon for his punctuality and meticulous record keeping, despite that fact very few of his patients survive their surgery.

The 20 year old won 2/2 of his take-ons, and won 7/7 of the tackles he made.

He recovered the ball some 15 times.

His problem was that he undid all of his good work by endlessly losing the ball.

Jan Vertonghen and Serge Aurier were also dreadful in this respect.

Much blame however must fall upon our midfield who were pressed into oblivion.

Eric Dier and Moussa Sissoko do not cope well under pressure and the inevitable happened, which is to say they were seriously marginalised and the back four bore the brunt of it.

Ben Davies haters might wish to look away again – because he had a comparatively good game.

Passing accuracy up where it ought to be at 85.2% and he only fluffed his lines in the attacking third – which contrasts uncomfortably with young Foyth.

Toby shouldn’t have been dropped – anyone wanting debate that better bring a flask and some sandwiches because you’ll be a here a long time making a fool of yourself. The argument, ‘oh but had we had a midfield he’d have been better’ is no good. If my aunt had wheels, she’d be a bicycle.

Poch got a lot wrong yesterday and this Foyth business was probably the tip of the iceberg.

A similar thing happened when we beat Utd away, we went all guano straight after. A pattern is emerging, we need to toughen up to be true winners.

I agree we cant know the reasons, only Poch does, but its clear to see that the NLD is not a game to rotate your best 11 – injury or suspension is only excuse to not play your best players.

Horrid loss. Spurs were completely unprepared in tactic and in personnel for what Arsenal brought to the match. It looked like they had the attitude that “It’s only Arsenal.” Spurs haven’t earned any right to be arrogant or dismissive of other squads, and Arsenal showed up like they took exception to that notion.

Arsenal’s players and staff celebrated all over the pitch after that match like they just won a title. This rivalry still means a great deal to them. It looked for a bit like Spurs might work through it, but there was no room for mistakes in a derby rivalry match.

Toby’s benching is a mystery. Did Pochettino simply rotate, or was he sending some sort of message pertaining to Toby’s future ? Makes no difference. It was not the right setting in which to send a message, and it was not the right time to rotate out an experienced and healthy DB.

Lloris wore the band and led the squad by consistently playing out panicked and unnecessary clearances. What sort of message does that send as a keeper, let alone a captain ? Aurier was yelling at his teammates while giving the ball away just as much. Vertonghen had a mare of a match. Credit to Arsenal for throwing an energy and gameplan at Spurs for which Spurs were completely unprepared.

I can only imagine that Arsenal fans were exponentially more obnoxious at their workplaces the next day than the players were on the pitch post match. I feel for any of you that had to endure a ration of crap.

Spurs need to watch that postmatch celebration again. and again. and again. Let it soak in. Act dismissive of these squads, and they are going to bring some wood to the match. Taking a rivalry match with any less than a best squad and best effort will result in days just like Sunday.

I’m coming around to the idea that all this press press stuff needs a squad to be able to do it week in week out. The only club that have that at the moment is Man City, which is why they’ll win the league.

We were fresh and did it against Chavs and they couldn’t handle it, Woolwich did it to us and they were also fresh (they played all kids in the Ropey). You have to be 100% energised to play it and play against it and we were sluggish and looked off the pace. Poch thought we could manage the game and grow into it but like we did against Chavs we weren’t allowed to.

I still believe we are a better side than Woolwich but if a decent side press like that and the opposition aren’t 100% on the day the it generally works. Either that or you need a calm and resolute defence to soak it, take the sting out of it and go from there. We had neither yesterday, which is why we lost.

Yesterday it looked like Emerys philosophy had finally come to fruition, a bit like when we beat Chelsea 5-3 a few years ago it was the first time you could see Poch’s philosophy come to the fore. I’d have loved to see Winks to go toe to toe with Torreira. Jan had an afternoon of brain-farts which probably didn’t help Foyth and it’s not like Aurier is a sea of calm either when the chips are down. Dropping Toby for what is probably our 2nd biggest game of the season was nuts. End of.

Fair play to Arsenal, they beat us at our own game and won the day. Unlike our lad, Emery has list of trophies he can point to and once he gets a few windows under his belt the Goons will be dangerous again. Spurs will need to keep apace. Over to you Daniel.

For now let Claude and his merry bunch of Goons lose the run of themselves until Utd bring them back down to earth on Wednesday.

Pochettino who is ordinarily so measured with youth players suddenly decide that Foyth was the superior player for this North London Derby. ** how do we know Poch decided that and not simply rotated because Toby had played more recent games that all other CBs over the past two month?

I don’t think it was the best decision for this game but I doubt you can claim what you do with those two statements with any certainty

Dissapointing but not unforgivable.

The new found fight in our team could also be seen as ill discipline?

Such a shame that a tool like Ramsey got to have the last word over Dier. I would like to see Diers tunnel cam!

The entire defensive unit wasn’t good enough yesterday. Loris is consistently poor. Never captain material. drop him. Aurier just isnt good enough. A bad buy and no amount of coaching will improve his defending enough to cope with a half decent atrack. Foyth- a big game too early especially played alongside Verts who wasnt fully up to speed after a long lay off. Davies did ok at best. Then theres Dier. Eric Dier is at best championship standard. No pace. Poor passing. Slow to turn. Doesn’t read the game well. Dier and Sissoko in the engine room just isn’t going to cut it. Toby for Foyth and Winks for Dier. I don’t care how jaded either player was, this was the NLD FFS. Poch is tactically a dunce.

That’s oh so true…..

1. Fitness and ability to play 3 games a week does not appear to be an issue for Kane or Sissoko and others who have aggregated more than 2 games.

2. The dropping of big players during a tight schedule is understandable, but this was a week of 3 huge games we won 2 but could have won 3. So much of winning and losing is about what’s in the head – the heart manages then that. Winning 3 would have no only fortified our capability to ourselves (which, clearly we need evidenced on the way we fell apart), but also further defined the to opposition players when facing us: instead we re-inforced, “….it’s only Tottenham”.

3. I too wonder where the much lauded fitness program has gone; two seasons ago we ran everyone off the park. Has every other club initiated its own and caught us up? I don’t see us running sides off the park and I don’t see us bullying the middle of the field. I see a lot of payers on the treatment table, I see players clearly not at their physical best and perhaps psychologically fatigued.

I can’t help but agree that maybe all is not well behind the fog of THFCs transparency

Why is it so hard for Poch to not see what’s unfolding when things rnt going to plan?
Away to a top 4(6) rival why not set up to absorb and counter, play a tactical game?
Make the natives restless then step it up when legs are tiring?
Or when looking how things were panning out yesterday take both of the ineffective Eriksen & Alli off and play 433 with Lucas & Son providing pace and support to Kane and winks in the middle with Dier and Sissoko to stop us getting over run and maybe keep some meaningful possession?
Stop expecting the full backs to get up the line and tuck in IE hold on to what you’ve got.
The leaving out of Alderwerild is beyond laughable but to stand there watching it all crumble was pathetic.
Still doing the same s h i t day in day out, good when it works but when it doesn’t it’s slow predictable and error prone.
Between Emery & Pochettino there was stark contrasts on how to manage an important game, the Arsenal players were running and pressing like it was the NLD, their passing was positive and being at home they looked to attack at every opportunity.
Our guys lead by Poch the statue could barely put 2 passes together, didn’t get stuck in, looked void of any game plan to unsettle or even take it to Arsenal.
Pochettino was like a Spurs ghost of Wenger on that touchline while Emery was like a Simeone….
This isn’t the 1st time it’s happened in a big game and won’t be the last, it could be forgiven if you’ve acted/reacted and come up short still, but to just watch it fall apart with nothing in your tactical armoury to sort it out or plug holes/nulify is simply not good enough at this level.
This is the problem when people are lauded for abject failure, 2 seasons where no one turned up and Poch lead us to best of the rest is his legacy thus far , now the big clubs have regrouped were back in 5th – look how far we’ve come brigade has gone full circle

The benching of Toby Alderweireld was surely Poch’s way of managing the Belgian’s expectations for the summer. ** How can you be sure of that?

Pochettino who is ordinarily so measured with youth players suddenly decide that Foyth was the superior player for this North London Derby. ** how do we know Poch decided that and not simply rotated because Toby had played more recent games that all other CBs over the past two month?

I don’t think it was the best decision for this game but I doubt you can claim what you do with those two statements with any certainty

Bit of a snarler in the tackle aint he! (I like that) if you kick him he’ll kick you back harder. He looks so innocent. Naughty player in there.

Dissapointing but not unforgivable.

The new found fight in our team could also be seen as ill discipline?

Such a shame that a tool like Ramsey got to have the last word over Dier. I would like to see Diers tunnel cam!
